Default Exhaust bolts confusion

2005 Boxster S 987.1

I'm trying to remove the exhaust system-picked up a Carnewal. I was told these 3 per side nuts were 13mm. I can't tell exactly what's happening here-looks like it's all disintegrated. It definitely doesn't seem like these are 13mm. Any thoughts, info, advice?

I think I recall them being 8mm. You need to spray them with some degreaser at a minimum. With that corrosion - be prepared to break a few and replace.

They have been soaking. Maybe if I can get a wire brush on them I can clean enough to get a socket on. I couldn't find anything that would get a grip-trying not to guess wrong.

update-I can't make heads or tails of what this is supposed to be. Looks like I will have to take it to someone.

Those look like the type of exhaust nuts that are on my '74 911. I believe they are 12mm. They look funny because the top part is round and not a perfect circle - I think that is some type of metal locking nut that is used for exhaust systems.

My 987.2 are 13mm, so the assumption would be the same for you - likely, but not of course 100%.
The issue though, as you suggest, is possible disintegration of the fixings.

I've seen someone else have a similar problem, and they needed to oxy, then punch out the headless studs remaining after grinding off the remains you appear to have.

Here's some pics of my 13mm removal process, which other than the tight space, went reasonably smoothly...

It's starting to look like a job for the professionals to me.

All six of mine broke on my 987.2. I found that starting to drill them out, adding heat and then hitting them with a punch got them out. Much easier to do if you have a lift.

It happened to me as well while I was replacing mine to Carnewal, 981 BS.
13mm was not tight enough to loosen rusty nuts, so I moved down to 1/2 inch and 7/16 inch socket.
It is off with that. Try it with slightly smaller socket.
