Question Updating 987.2 Boxster S Front Air Intakes to Spyder style

Hello everyone, long time lurker, but recently purchased a 2009 Boxster S so finally registered!

I'm interested in updating the 2 lower front bumper grills from the dated looking wider light with 2 slats style to the more modern looking slim LED with black plastic housing and more open single slat intake with surround. (see pictures below).

I was looking on Suncoastparts and the following parts look like they would cover most of what is needed, but I'm curious if anyone has already tackled this project or after further research there were other major hurdles.

I'd rather not spend a fortune doing a bunch of custom work but some minor modification would be reasonable. (Really hoping that with the right parts it would all just bolt right up since they are both 987.2 Boxster bumpers as a starting point.)

Any insight would be awesome!

Are the part numbers for the bumpers identical? If so, would seem pretty straight-forward, although never attempted it. I like the idea though!

I've done a little bit of searching and the only two bumpers I saw for 2009 and 2010 (including spyder) were a version for bumpers WITH headlight washers and a version WITHOUT.
Anyone know if all Spyders have headlight washers?
When it warms up a bit I'll just have to go out and disassemble my bumper a bit to see what I can see.

Only Gen 1 Spyders with the upgraded light option have the headlight washers. Mine came with the standard lights and no washers.

Spyder was only 2011-2012 though. Just doing a little digging, the bumper part listed that I can find is 2009-2012 which makes sense. This one comes up on both the 2009 S search, and 2012 Spyder search... which tells me that the bumper part (ignoring the washers) is probably the same.

There is a different part number as well: 98750531143

Digging around on the pages daylorb mentioned, I found eight versions: 987-505311-X, where X=28, 29, 30, 31, 40, 41, 42, and 43. They're all combinations/permutations of S/Spyder, with/without washer, with/without Auto trans, etc. So it doesn't look like there is any way to know if the Spyder side grills will fit other than by trying it.

Yes, definitely going to be a try-it, but it seems like if you have a manual, with no washers - the part is for both S and Spyder 09-12. Are you seeing different S vs. Spyder?

Ugh, talk about having too much time on your hands.... Attached is an analysis I did of the part descriptions on the site you mentioned. Looks like Porsche has a different front bumper cover for every option combination. That says to me that they are not the same. I'd want some test fit proof before I bought one.

PS: Be sure to check my assumptions; I may be making some wrong ones.

Thanks everyone for the input and analysis of part numbers; I appreciate it !
At this point I'm cautiously optimistic that this may work w/ my standard S no washers bumper.

I'll report back w/ success or failure at some point as I have time.

Much as I love to fool with stuff like this, it seems like a lot of work and $$ for a little gain.

A way to dress up the front of a plain Boxster may be to work with the aero pieces from the bodykit. Suncoast carries those, though they aren't cheap.

If you do get it done though, hats off and post the details!

Any updated? Did you get it to work?

question, if you installed the Spyder front bumper grills then you would lose the led running lights in the process?

Unfortunately I haven't taken the time to dive into this project yet, although I'd still like to. As for the DRLs, I would think there is a way to use the Spyder style light in that grill in place of the regular light, but some type of conversion might be necessary (hoping Porsche engineers kept it simple and just had a different light attach to the same 987.2 wiring but wouldn't know until I dug into).

Does anyone know if these fit a 987.2 Boxster S? I think it’s double sided tape not sure if there’s screws involved

Disregard my reply. My apologies, I saw the color matched bumper slats in the photo from your original post and thought you had a base model. Perhaps it will still help folks with a base car so I'll leave the info below but it obviously won't apply to your S model.

Earlier last year I had a 2010 Base Boxster and didn't care for the look of the color matched front bumper strakes. What I did though was order some 'S' front bumper strakes which are simply a matte finish black. Simple and relatively cheap upgrade that IMO really changed the look of the front end. You simply unlatch your current painted slats and snap on the black S slats. 2 minute job and again not a lot of outlay.
