Headers are a great option to allow more of the flat six sound through while increasing response. The issue is you are in CA and altering the catalytic converters is pretty much forbidden by CARB. The rear exhaust is fair game.

You are required to get a "Smog Certification" every two years before the the DMV will accept your vehicle license renewal. Some cars are required to visit a "Star (certified) Station for the test. This may require a "tailpipe reading" while cycling the engine thru a prescribed sequence. Some cars now only need an "OBD" readout to see if any issues have been flagged indicating a malfunction within the system that manages emissions. The tech at the smog station is "supposed to" do a visual inspection of the vehicle to see if anything has been changed from stock. This could include looking under the rear of he car.
Fabspeed is pleased to offer their "improved performance" exhaust systems but specifically state that their "cats" are not (CARB) certified in California and may affect registration renewal. Of course, if your car is only used on the track, and never on the street, that's another story.........

What race headers did you use?
What I like about it is, with the exhaust open its LOUD! When closed it is pretty quiet. Not Toyota quiet, but quiet enough.

Race Headers are catless and wouldn't pass emissions as they delete the cats, but our Street Headers with HJS 200 cell cats would make a significant gain and should pass emissions without issue in states that do not require CARB visual certification like CA. As you are in TX, you should be okay. Something else you can consider is how often you have emissions. Headers are a relative breeze to swap on and off on these cars, so you can swap back from race headers to stock for emissions if you so choose. Race headers would require a tune to turn off the CEL for catalyst inefficiency, which we can arrange for you as well. Our street headers with the HJS cats shouldn't have a CEL and therefore a tune isn't required for those.
Here is a good reference video of catless race headers and factory PSE on my Cayman R. It is a superb combination, and I have thousands of miles of seat time with the combination if you have any questions.
