Default Help what do you think is happening.

I posted earlier this week about the replica Fuchs I mounted on my 2008 Cayman. After they were mounted and balanced I took the on the road to rest TPMS without any difficulty. The drive included a burst in speed to almost 100 mph with no vibrations or difficulties. Had the car washed and parked in in the garage.

Later that day I drove down our alley and heard a rubbing or scratching sound at each revolution of the wheel coming from the rear. I listened for it coasting with clutch in and in neurtral with clutch out and in and in gear sounded the same no matter the mode. I jack both rear wheels up and spun them manually and NO NOISE at all. Tried 4 or 5 times. I did the same with the fronts NO NOISE. Took off several wheels and saw no signs of rubbing.

Remounted and drive down the alley slowly and DAMN the noise is clearly still there. I'm mystified.....ant thoughts?

I like the late 80s look od these wheels though.

Are the new tires the same diameter and width as before?

I remember having a similar issue years ago, different car though. In my instance the lug bolts were a touch too long and were contacting something inside the rotor hat. I’m not sure you’re having the same issue, just throwing out ideas.

They are not new tires.

That's an interesting theory. Others have used this wheel with no issues. But I suppose lug bolts could stretch but I don't think that much. I used old ones maybe I should buy some new bolts.

Further that should be able to be duplicated when rear is jacked off ground and you manually spin wheel and that doesn't happen

You sure your brakes aren't dragging?
The 981 might have come with those bushings that need to be changed out on the pedal.

Any scoring on the inside of the wheels or the rotor hats? Sound coming from all four wheels? Checked to see if you have any stones trapped on one of the wheels?

I repeat when car is jacked up and wheels are turned by hand I get no noise at all, from any wheel. I know that takes weight off wheels and suspension but no noise when turned manually shows me it's not brake drag, rotor shield stone or lug bolt related.

Put a line of white shoe polish north south on the inside sidewall of each tire up from wheel through the first tread block and drive down the road. Once you get the sound go home and see if you can tell what’s rubbing. Absent that, maybe have a dealer put a magic ear on it to help isolate the sound.

Yep. Wheel may be contacting part of the suspension, which should leave a discernible mark. Might be able to fix with a spacer.

Is it coming from both rear wheels or just one? If both, I'd guess you're hitting the suspension (as mentioned above). These are the same tires, but what's the offset and width of these wheels compared to your old ones?

If it's just one wheel making noise, it could be a bearing starting to fail.
When the wheel is off the ground and you grab the wheel at 9 and 3, is there any play? What about at 12 and 6? I've had wheel bearings start to go (on other cars) and they would only make a noise when under the load of the vehicle. Jacked up and spinning, no noise at all. This could just be ironic timing of installing the new wheels or having unloaded the suspension when jacking things up could have allowed something to loosen.

Check your balancing weights. I had an issue when I downsized my wheels on my MINI. The wheel weights didn't have enough clearance between the lower control arm and the weight and it would rub. It wouldn't do it with the wheel in the air because the geometry was different. But rolling on the ground, especially when turning, it would rub like crazy. I thought something was broken.

Default No more noise.

Mystery solved, handbrake cable was rubbing on inside edge of new wheels. It was zip tied so as to not interfere. Noise gone, I'm happy.
