Porsche 982 Cayman S or BMW I8
Hello guys, I'm a new member on this forum. I'm looking to purchase a certified pre-owned 2017 Cayman S (<10k km) after coming from a Mercedes. But recently, I've noticed quite a few BMW I8's dropping in price. I could also purchase a 2015 BMW I8 with around 25k kms on the clock for a similar price to the Porsche. Are there any pros and cons to each car? As far as I know, performance is quite similar in terms of both straight line speed and track. I'm mainly looking for a sports car that can post fast track times but can also be driven everyday if needed. Anyone got any recommendations for me?
Thanks a lot!

i8 and track? Really? Are you interested in cars that “post” fast tracktimes or would you go on track yourself. Haven’t seen any hybrid / EV which was really up to track duty (except 918, and even that comes with limitations).

I would be wary of using an I8 regularly on track, partly because of the complexity and partly because of the lack of established knowledge of how to make the cars reliable on track. That said, it could be fun. In contrast, there is a track-oriented enthusiast group for the Cayman that will know the likely failure points and/or preventative measures to assure reliability and identify trouble issues for the Porsche.
A member of a local multi-marque club has an I8. His comments were that the car handles incredibly well, but does not "feel" as quick as some previous cars. Subjective, yes, but that's part of the excitement of track days.

Having driven an i8 for a day, I'd never own one. The doors are perfectly designed to smack your head on every time you get out of the car. They look nice. They are fun to drive. They are not a car I'd want to live with.

I8 is a joke.

Thanks for all the advice! Reading the replies, I feel like the general consensus is the Cayman S having better reliability and performance on the track. I don’t doubt the Porsche, but the I8 does come close in terms of track times according to online specs. That doesn’t show it’s true performance on the track though, in terms of overheating, etc. I haven’t personally driven one yet, so I can’t comment on that. However, it’s also cheaper and better fuel economy, in addition to those doors which make it look a lot more expensive than it is. Since the 982 got downsized into a turbo 4, how does the engine note and exhaust compare with the I8’s turbo 3?

This should not be a comparison. The i8 is more a novelty item at the current tech. There is no way it will be a reliable track car, regardless of track times. The flat 4 also sounds much better than the i8 motor. You're comparing totally different cars.

$150k for a 228hp/1.5 liter 3 cylinder mated to a 141 electric motor with an 18 mile range? That does 0-60 in over 4 seconds? As PA said above, it's a novelty. But more of a joke in terms of serious sports car performance. And that price. That's the real joke.
