Default 981 blower motor won't turn off

Wondering how long to wait until I start pulling fuses. It's about 80 and a bit humid today, was driving with the top down and a/c off for about 15 minutes when suddenly the blower turned on what felt like close to full blast. It's been on ever since. Drove back home, turned ignition off, ate lunch- it's been about 30 minutes after shutting it off and the fan is still going full speed.

Again, this is the blower motor inside the cabin, not the engine fan.

Could this be normal under any circumstances?

I would say no. So when you set the blower control to zero it still blows full on? Time to pull the fuse before your battery is dead.

Yep, and the car has been off for hours. Fuse has long been pulled and it's headed to the dealer tomorrow. I'll update the thread once I get a verdict for future reference.

My bet is that when it gets to the dealer it works perfectly and remains that way until you are about 5 miles from the dealer on your way home. Hope not.

Yeah sorry no update; I actually decided (with help from the wife) to not bring it in until the dealer had a loaner ready. Thoughts are that if it goes into an extended diagnostic period I'd like to not be without a car. I don't have a commute per se, but I do rely on my car for transportation; it isn't just for nice days and weekends. I've been just driving with the top down on the occasion or two I need to; it's a perfect time of year for that anyway.

My appointment is tomorrow. But if I plug the fuse in right now, the blower motor would be on, so I'm not too worried about not being able to duplicate the condition.

Happened to my '14 boxster. Turned out to be the fan controller module died. Bough a replacement and installed myself. Had to remove glove box for easy access.

So far dealer claims it's a blower motor resistor. Deciphering the nomenclature, maybe it's the same thing. I'll be sure to get the part number. They ordered the part, it'll be here Tuesday.

Quick update; looks like it's all the same thing. "blower motor resistor", "blower regulator", "blower control unit" appears to be all interchangeable names for the same part.

Where it all comes together is the part number: 991-624-423-01. A quick google search shows prices ranging from $130-150, so a relatively cheap and easy fix.

Same part as mine. At the time (late January) there were UK retailers on eb*y that offered new ones (apparently used in VW and Mercedes) for $50 plus $35 shipping. I bought a used one from a US dismantler for $75 shipped and it worked.

Anyway to get to the module, the glove box had to come out to get access. Knee airbag had to be loosened (E8 bolts) and an air tube removed. The wire from the blower motor is too short, so you have to pull the plug on the module first to get the room to get the long heat sink fins out of the housing. Good time to change cabin fresh air filter while in the vicinity.

I call it a controller module since it is intelligent and takes a signal from the A/C control in the center console and then the module decides how to adjust the voltage/current of the fan in many speed increments. The bad thing of this is that when it dies, it can short and put power on the fan full time.

In my flood car's case, there was a ground electrical spike that took the module out as the fan and module were nowhere near the water level.

Sounds like the same design and occasional replacement required back in my 944 days. Old resistor pack was the size of a very small harmonica.

So, are our cars getting old enough to have the same issues my 944 had when it was aging? This could become an increasingly interesting board dialogue

And the 1980's era Audi 5000's. Same thing. Always had problems. When the ventilation system seemed haunted, the "resistor bar" was almost always the culprit.

my 14 Cayman Base fan will always start with the fan on in the previous position when I turn the car on. If I had the fan on 3 clicks that's where the will begin when I start the car again however, if the fan is off when I turn the car off, the fan will start on one click when I start the car. Has anyone experienced the same. Don't want to replace the control modules if this is a factory setting. It's annoying. When I turn it off I want it off. Does anyone have any pics/videos of the location of the blower control module? TIA

As annoying as it is, it seems to be the factory setting. Exactly the same thing happens to my car and many others.

As brilliant as Porsche engineering is, little things like this are absolute stupidity. Thanks for getting back to me.
