2014 981 S - Issues w/ starting?
On my 2014 981 S 6 speed...100% of the time in sport mode.
About 6-8 weeks ago I noticed I had trouble starting the car when leaving the office.. it made noise, just wouldn't actually turn over. I tried multiple times with no luck. Then, walked away, came back as I was on the phone with my tech and it started. I took the car in a few days later and we couldn't find anything wrong...
Fast forward to this am, similar issue with a new twist. I tried 2 or 3 times, no luck, got out and waited 10 seconds. Got back in, and tried again to no avail. 3rd time, it started up.
While at a red light with clutch in and 1st gear engaged the engine seemed to die and kick right back on. This happened about twice. The rest of my 10 minute drive to work was business as usual.
Any thoughts? Perhaps a gremlin related to the auto start/stop feature not working properly?
Thanks all!

Engine actually "died" (meaning required you to re-start the engine using the key) or it felt like it was about to stall, didn't, and then recovered?
Before hearing your answers, it sounds like a battery issue. Most (many?) quirky, gremlin-like symptoms similar to what you describe are related to defective batteries or poor grounds. Doubtful poor grounds exist on such a new car but I never rule anything out.

^Agree. My wife's A3 had all sorts of weird stuff going on (traction control disabling mid-drive, for instance) that was cured with a new battery.

Engine cranks but won't start? Or engine won't even crank?
The engine would crank for a few seconds but not start (each time it did this up until the point it started)
Engine actually "died" (meaning required you to re-start the engine using the key) or it felt like it was about to stall, didn't, and then recovered?
Good point. It was much more like the latter whereby it felt like it was about to stall, didn't, and then recovered.

I'll tell you what, if the battery is more than 2-2.5 years old OR fails a proper battery test, I would just have a brand new one installed as the first step in the diagnosis. At the wrong shop, you could spend $500 or more diagnosing a battery problem and you don't want that. Get the battery of out the equation immediately one way or the other.

I've recently had this same issue with my 2014 Cayman S.
Sometimes, especially after just a few minute drive, it won't restart. It'll crank and crank but won't start. Then a few minutes later it'll start just fine.
I had the HPFP checked and the tech said it was down to about 70% pressure so I had him replace it. Since the car has 50K miles on it, I figured it was about due.
But it's still having the no start issue.
The battery was replaced a couple years ago as preventative maintenance since it was 6 years old, so I doubt it's a battery issue.

Are the coils fine? They tend to cause weird issues as well.

Fuel pump relay.

I replaced the coils at my last spark plug change last year.
I've heard about fuel pump relays on 986's but not on 981. Are they the same? Is it an easy change?

Dunno about 986s, but my 981 had the relay failure. Had to be towed to the dealership, where (of course) it started up normally. Luckily the tech at the Bellevue dealer was on the ball and found the problem with the relay after testing it on the bench.

It acted up again today. Wouldn't start after sitting at a restaurant for a little over an hour. Finally started after several tries but then kept dying at idle all the way home.
I'd love to hear from someone who's replaced the fuel pump relay and knows where it is. Here's the wiring diagram that shows the relay but it doesn't show where it is.

Try looking close to the OBDII port. Item # 8 in this drawing. Edited to add: I just looked in my 2015 Cayman and did not see it shown as illustrated.
