Do all 981 spyders do that gurgling sound at off throttle? Any way to switch it off?

You can switch it off. However, I love it and always have it on.

there is no way to switch it off, just possible to mute it. I tried even talking to Cobb to see if we could switch off the fake gurgling.. real sports cars (like my GT3) don't have it.. it's completely artificial crap sound. When you have the sport exhaust button OFF, then the gurgling gets muted... but it's still there. I had sport headers on my car so the gurgles were louder all around, and i could hear them whether the sport exhaust was pressed or not. the programmed in-gurgles are omni-present, i'll never understand that.

I drive with the exhaust off most of the time. The valves still open at 3500rpm and give that awesome sound, but you get rid of all the fake pops and gurgles. I don’t notice them at all with it off.

On my first Spyder I got a buzzy resonance on decel with the exhaust off, so I kept it on a lot. On my current Spyder there’s no resonance so I leave it off most of the time.

Also on the mountains around here there are homes very close to the road and I feel disrespectful with the exhaust on, so I try to keep it quiet, particularly in the mornings.

Been saying this all along but 981 guys love it. Ignorance is bliss.

I definitely don't notice the cracks and pops when I have the exhaust button off. I think the Spyder definitely overdoes it with the cracks and pops and stuff. My MV Agusta F4 shoots flames out of it's rear on when I shut the throttle hard at very high rpms. It also makes those kinds of backfire pops etc etc but it sounds like a race bike and much better than what the Spyder does. That said I have yet to meet people who have been offended by the sound my car makes pops or not! in fact I have had GT3 owners who have no idea what a Spyder is tell me my car sounds better than theirs lol!

The pops and crackles sound fake and synthetic to me. They aren't well executed. My 991 c4s Cab had them too. As mentioned, the GT3 doesn't have them. A well executed example, IMO, of these noises is the GT350R. They sound genuine and random.

That said, I'll still happily drive a NA 982 Spyder that carries over those noises from the 981.

So only way to mute them is by switching PSE off? No way to have PSE on without them? They’re ridiculous and a major turn off for an otherwise great car.

I like the exhaust pops and crackles with the stock exhaust. For all those times I'm stuck in mundane traffic I think the extra sound is fun. However, with headers and exhaust mods those muffled extra rumbles are more like machine gun fire at wot which are not sound meter friendly at the track or pedestrian friendly everywhere else. Would love to switch or tune the out though on the plus side, they do generate flames at night....

The Gen 1 Spyder is not excessive. In fact I'd like it a bit louder and can probably get that with a set of Fabspeed or other headers. But normally it's not excessive. Probably in the "just right" category but just a bit quiet.

I wasn't talking about the exhaust sound level -- just the gurgle & pop at off throttle. The 987 Spyder has none of that.

987 exhaust doesn’t have the artificial popping/gurgle although every once in a while I will get the gurgle when coming off throttle. It’s a great sounding exhaust but like Joel noted, a touch quiet.

IMHO, the 987.2 Spyder was way too quiet... even with PSE.
