Default 987.1 Run or walk away?

Hello all, great forum. Have a Cayman S in PPI and I am concerned about the over revs.

Range 1 6004/ 1345h
Range 2 285/ 1284h
Range 3 158/1107h
Range 4 115/1107h
Range 5 5/1107h
Range 6 0

38,750 miles and 1348 hours. Thank you, in advance.

if its 250 hours past the last stage 4 or 5 the general rule is its not a problem - any issues would have arisen since then.

That being said I'd use this to negotiate the price, but it seems the car is fine. That is a lot of stage 4 and 5 overrevs though, I think most buyers would walk.

I bought a 2006 Cayman S in September, 43,000 miles, with 3600 cycles in Range 1 and 102 in range 2, nothing above that. These are normally considered as engine hitting rev limiter. When I was having PPI done on a 997 potential candidate, the report showed significant numbers (worse than yours) in the higher ranges, and the well-respected shop basically said run, do not walk, away. In your case, given that all the overrev cycles were at 1107 hours and were small in number, it would indicate one seriously missed shift. I'm not really knowledgeable, but I would say that your ppi should be a thorough one, and that this might be a good case for negotiation. There could be an impact on the engine, but might also be affected by otherwise regular maintenance, condition and price. There are plenty on the market.

Sorry for such a non-answer, but sometimes some comparative data can be useful. Will be interested in other's comments.

Edited....concur with tq.3z's comments.

Thanks for that. Comparative data is great! The 6000 range 1 data is almost more concerning. 1 solid minute (well almost) bouncing off the rev limiter? That is a hugely long time if you think about it. I know it's cumulative, but still...

If Range 1 is bouncing off the rev limiter, what is the significance of Ranges 2-6?

There's always another car out there.

So can a dealer check these overrevs for you (say, if you bought a car and take it in for service to check on its history)? Also, probably a dumb question, but can a PDK be overrev'd as well (naturally, I haven't tried it)?

PDK can have range 1 and 2 over revs, but not the problematical 4 and above.

Thanks everyone for the input. Most likely low ball them, walk away and keep looking. Hell, the hunt is half the fun for me.

Unless there’s something unique about this car I would just walk away, there’s plenty of other good cars available.
