Default Whining / whirring sound from engine, abnormal?

the sound is most present in gears 1-4 but does appear in 5 and 6 as well. This is a manual transmission 981 Boxster GTS. Sound increases in volume with increasing RPM and is much more noticeable with top up. Is this a normal noise from the engine or abnormal? It happens in neutral as well as in gear.

Water Pump....? Mine has a definite whine, engine RPM dependent. Been that way since a new pump installed around 55K miles. Now have 90K miles.

you’ve had the whine since installing a new pump? So seems like it’s fine?
