Default 2014 Boxster S vs 2011 911 Carrera Cabriolet?

I don’t know what to do. I have a 2011 Carrera Cabriolet with 46,000 miles. It’s Macadamia Metallic with PDK and Sport Chrono Package and a few other goodies. My wife has a 2014 Boxster S with 13,000 miles. It’s black with agate grey and amber orange interior. It also is a PDK with Sport Chrono Package. We have to get rid of one of them. I can’t decide what to do. Common sense says to keep the 911. But, the Boxster S has lower mileage and it can have all season tires. Yes, I know all seasons are not as good as summer, but we will be going from 4 cars to 2. So, she needs to be able to drive when it gets cool. We live in Chattanooga TN, so it’s not really ever snowy, just cool.

My questions about what one to keep center around long term reliability (911 has 30k more miles) and what one will hold its value better. They are both close in cost right now. Neither one costs more to maintain than the other one.

I think both are good choices. I don’t think I can go wrong with either one. Anyone care to weigh in?

I’m going to post this in both the 997 and the 981 forum….

981 forum: "981."

997 forum, if they are being honest with themselves and with you: "981."

I have both as well - I would keep the boxster S. If the 997 was a S maybe different story.

I had a similar situation. We were buying a Panamera, and had a 2012 911 Cab (Also Macadamia metallic, by the way) and a 987 Boxster. We traded them both in for the Panamera. After about a year, my wife and I both decided that we had made a mistake: we missed the Boxster. So, now there is a Boxster (981) in the garage next to the Panamera. Happy campers!

Ironically enough the boxster is the more practical car with 2 trunks. I know the 911 has the backseat room but no person is sitting back there and getting "stuff" in and out is not as easy as the trunk on the boxster. if it was a C4S and you had the all wheel drive to also contend with the decision is more difficult for sure. Both are great cars and you are correct you can't really go "wrong" here but I imagine there will be times no matter which way you decide to go where you'll miss the other car. I'm just inclined to think that will happen slightly less if you keep the boxster instead. you will get good money for either car, nice problem to have!

I’d keep the 981 for several reasons but one of them is that it is more “special” than the 911 in the arc of the history of the cars. After the 981, Porsche went with the turbo-4 cylinder 718, and while it may have had slightly better styling it had a worse engine and exhaust note (in my view). The modern 992 911 on the other hand is (IMO) the perfection of the 911in terms of performance and styling. So keep the 981 and have one of the last “great” Boxsters vs just another 911 in the string of ever better 911’s. .

Exactly. The 981-based models -- and spiritually I'd include the 718 GT cars and GTS 4.0 in that category -- will be ranked with the greatest street-legal sports cars of all time, from any marque. There was nowhere to go from there but down, and Porsche knew it.

The 997 is certainly a great sports car, but as pointed out "it's just another 911."
