Default FVD tune - dyno results

Loaded the FVD tune to the car yesterday and had before and after dyno runs done. WHP went from 275.71 to 302.49; Torque went from 234.86 to 253.95 lb.-ft., so they met their advertised numbers plus a bit. According to my calculations, the car loses a little over 15% of its HP at the crank by the time it gets to the wheels: 325 HP (rated) at the crank minus 275 HP (measured, "before") at the wheels is a loss of 15.4%. So, reversing that equation gives an estimated "after" crank HP number of 357.55 (302.49 / 0.846). It seems to lose less Torque from the crank to the wheels: 273 lb.-ft. (rated) at the crank minus 237.44 lb.-ft. (measured, "before") at the wheels is a loss of 13%. So, reversing that equation gives an estimated "after" crank Torque number of 291.9 lb.-ft. (253.95 / 0.87).

Subjectively, the car seems to pull harder now, and the shift points in Sport mode (auto) are a bit higher than before (and the dyno plot shows that redline has moved from around 7.8K to almost 8K), but I've only driven the car about 20 miles since the dyno runs, so it'll be a while before I get a feel for the total effect.

Thanks for posting this! I'm running a Cobb Stage 1 OTS tune so I assume I'm getting a bit less but I can definitely feel more of a shove past 4k rpm.

Great post! I believe your car is an S. The 3.4L engine in the S/GTS can realize a huge gain like that because the engine is detuned by the factory to male sure Boxster/Cayman wouldn't beat Base 911 (991.1) with the same engine rated at 350/287. My 981BS (rated 315/266) has the FVD tune and FVD Sport Headers. With the tune + headers, I think my car is making similar numbers as yours.

What other mods besides the tune?

Wow, great results and thanks for sharing. Well worth the price IMHO.

I've heard only good things about the Cobb tune, but I've never driven a car with that tune, so I can't compare. I can tell you that the pull in the power band with this tune is incredible (I'll post a reply later about something that happened earlier today...)

I've heard the same thing, and it makes sense, but I'd have to imagine you're getting better numbers than me with those Sport Headers.

Nothing except the Carnewal GT exhaust, which I love (and get lots of compliments on, including from the guys at the tuning shop where I had the dyno pulls done yesterday: "Wow! What kind of exhaust do you have on this thing? It sounds awesome!"), but it's not a performance mod, per se (unless you consider an awesome exhaust note a performance enhancement, which I guess I kinda do ).

So now that I have another 30 miles or so on the tune, I can say that the pull in the power band (3.5K to 6.5K) is insane! I was coming home from the gym tonight on I-71, cruising along at about 70 in 6th gear in the middle lane when a Honda pulled out right in front of me from the right lane doing about 50. There was somebody coming up in the left lane, but not that close and not that fast, so I floored it and pulled out into the left lane to avoid t-boning the Honda. The pull pinned me back into my seat so hard, it almost felt like having a turbo, but without the lag. I was doing 95 before I knew it.

I think I'm really gonna like this tune...

I love my FVD tunes. I am on my 2nd FVD tune that programmed my new headers. It is another level now with headers and enhanced FVD tune. I would highly recommend FVD tunes!!

Thanks for posting the dyno runs. This is exactly what many of us would love to see. Just a straight up tune comparison without all the other parts. Also proves the butt dyno results are indeed real and not imaginary hahaha

Kevin's car is a 981 Cayman S. It is Cayman because he stated the rated stock horse power was 325 (Boxster is rated at 315). The 2.7 doesn't make that much of power before/after the tune.

@storii is correct; my car is an S.

Great results Kevin thanks for sharing, we are on similar upgrade paths, I also just fitted the Carnewal exhaust and had a tune that really woke the car up. I agree the exhaust sounds great just a hint of drone but nothing unmanageable. Are you considering headers in the future, I'm toying with catless headers but still researching which vendor to select.

I am thinking about headers, but they're not in the budget ATM (I want to get the FVD Brombacher Sport Cat headers, partially because FVD will upgrade the tune I already have for free to take full advantage of the headers, but mostly because I believe they're the best aftermarket headers for a Porsche).

Looks good. Is that a 93-octane tune? We can't get better than 92 at the pumps around here, sadly.
