Default Removing Brake Disc Set Screws - Help

I am replacing my rotors and I can't get two of the set screws out. This is my first time doing brakes on any car but I've watched a lot of videos. 2014 Boxster S w/72k miles. Second time the rotors have been replaced.

I've used an impact driver to get the others out but the last two, I cannot get them out. I've also tried a heat gun, penetrating oil, banging on it and the impact screw driver. No luck.

Should I just wack the impact driver harder? Use a heavier hammer? I'm worried about damaging the wheel bearings. This can't be good for them.

I understand that these screws are only used and needed for initial manufacturing at the factory and useless after that so should I drill them out as a last resort?

If an impact driver won’t work, I’d just drill it out.

Thanks. I asked the same question in another forum and they said use a 3 lb hammer on the impact driver. I've been using a normal carpenter hammer. I'm going to try it tonight.

Yeah, you need a mini sledge. If that doesn't work, borrow an electric impact gun, or just drill it.

Those screws on cars are literally the only reason I own an impact driver, lol.

Just drill out the head, remove the rotor, and the screw will only be finger tight..... don't beat the hell out of the bearing with a 3lb hammer........

Thanks guys. I used a mini-sledge and they both came out just fine and surprisingly the disc came off without any trouble! Wheew!

Don't forget to add Anti-Seize Compound to the new screws. I did last time and I'll be changing my pads and front rotors this weekend. I'll find out if it actually works!

Absolutely! That is exactly what I was thinking when I was trying to get these screws out. The last Indy who replaced the rotors apparently must not have done that.

Just an update to share. Everything went back together just fine. I was really happy with everything. So I got into my car, and started the engine in preparations for pumping the brakes and doing a test drive.

Three warning messages came up! ABS/PSM fault, Emergency Brake Fault, Auto Start/Stop fault!....but ok to drive. OMG.....what did I do? I went out for a drive and the brakes worked great.....I was really happy about that. But what did I screw up? I thought the emergency brake was on the rear wheels.....and why was the auto/start failure showing up? I decided I must have blown a fuse. I checked the likely fuses and they were all good. I spent the afternoon pissed off at myself and cursing Porsche for making these cars so complicated.

Then I got my scanner out, plugged it into the OBD port and figured out how to drill down into the fault codes to tell me what was going on. It's a iCarsoft POR V3.0. I noticed that the driver side wheel speed sensor was reading 0 km/hrs as expected. But the passenger side front wheel was showing "fault". Ah ha! I must not have reconnected that ABS amphenol correctly. ....or I broke a wire, screwed up the orientation of the sensors or something else. At least I knew where to look.

I put the car back on the lift, took the wheel off, removed the ABS connecter and reseated it. Started up the engine and all fault codes were cleared! Wheew!

Brakes worked great. First time changing brakes on any car......Saved $1350 bucks!

Good job trouble shooting those faults. Amazing how finicky these cars can be.

I have a cheap B&D impact wrench. I use a breaker bar to loosen and the wrench to spin on or off. Also for the set screws. One of these days I'll splurge on one strong enough to break loose.

I removed the set screws with this from home depot. It was cheap. You can also attach sockets to it if you wanted to use it to remove bolts.

I hate those screws. Once I got them out, I never re-installed them. The wheel and lugs are what actually hold the rotor in place.

You don't need them, but I find the little screws convenient for holding the rotor in place if you're running lug bolts. If you're running studs then forget about 'em.
