Default Climate control upgrade possible?

Love my "new to me" GTS. My only minor annoyance is the lack of automatic climate control. This is something I have gotten quite used to in my other vehicles and it would be a nice addition to the 981. So, has anyone done this? What other components would have to be changed? Would the new control unit need to be codded to the vehicle?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

What do you mean by "automatic climate control?" Exactly what do you want your climate control to do?

981's come with 2 different climate control systems.

The first is the one where you set hot/cold on a scale like any old fashion car (not based on an actual temperature), and then set the fan speed manually. This was for the whole car, no separate control for the passenger.

The other option was automatic climate control, where the driver could select a temp and the car will automatically vent temps to get that section of the cabin to that temp. The passenger could do the same.

I don't know if you can retrofit one for the other, I would expect one would need a PIWIS coding at a minimum, but the question is if the car comes with all the wiring/sensors needed - generally 981's are pretty stingy with extra wiring/sensors for things it doesn't need/use.

I'm pretty sure your GTS has automatic climate control. I have a 2013 S with controls as pictured. The Auto button is as you describe. Car controls the fan and vents based on temp. If you manual select a vent or fan speed Auto turns off.

Your control unit is exactly like mine: you can set temperatures individually for driver and passenger with the two "Temp" switches. I think you may be correct that if you set the fan speed manually, it controls the fan on all vents.

That's not mine. It's a picture of what I would like to install, if possible.

This is what is in my car:

Crazy. My 2004 had climate control as standard equipment. My grandfathers 1974 Buick had it.

I am very interested in this answer as well. My 981CS has the manual climate control and it’s always been a little bit of an annoyance.

It appears that it would be much more involved that switching the switch panel and coding and most likely a complete system change.

Well, I guess that answers my question. Thanks for posting that detailed information.

Manual climate control will continue exist in my car!

What kind of service manual is it?

This is from the 2013 Technik Introduction (180 pages) which is a training guide for the Porsche technicians with an overview of the changes in the model changes. For instance there are also ones for the 987.2 that describes the new PDK and direct injection engines and also a guide for the new 981 Caymans. They are very informative resources.

I can tell you from experience with the same question on a 987.2, if you just change the climate control unit, it will work on heat, so set it to 68, and it will hold that temperature, BUT it will not call for the A/C compressor when you try to cool........

Never got around to figuring out what is missing, but it seems like it thinks part of the system is frozen (condenser maybe?), due to a missing sensor.......
