Question Would you buy this car?

Hi,

I am trying to figure out if it is a good idea to buy a 2016 Porsche Cayman Black Edition (https://www.porschedowntownla.com/ce...1344b4c3c6.htm)
  • 2016 Porsche Cayman Black Edition
  • Comes with 2 year Porsche CPO
  • Priced at $54,000 (no room for negotiation)
  • 17,000 miles, 2 previous owners.
  • No accidents reported

When I went to the dealership yesterday to test drive the car, I noticed scratches all around the car. The salesrep let me know that although the mechanical work required for CPO is done, they haven't had a chance to repaint the scratches and detail the car (will be done this week).

Trying to figure out if this is normal wear and tear after 5 years (17k miles) and negligible after repainted/fixed by P dealership or is the current condition more serious and I should reconsider?

Here some photos:

That one looks a little rough for the low miles it has. If they resprayed the front fascia and rockers and it was quality work, and they fixed the wheel rash you might consider it depending on how it came out. A quality detail with paint correction would go a long way to making it look better as well. As it is, the price seems high to me for the current condition. This one appears to have had a rough life so far, but it can be saved.

For only 17k miles, that car has had a hard life. Not trying to knock where you live, but LA seems hard on cars. If you really like the car (Black Edition features, color, trim etc.) then I'd suggest you put a deposit down to hold the car subject to being able to inspect it AFTER they detail and prep the car. If they do a terrific job, then go ahead and purchase, but if they don't make sure you can walk away. They won't realistically sell the car until it's been prepped for sale anyway.

I love that style of wheel, but I hate how those look.

If the dealer can get the condition of the car to a point where you are happy with it, then this shouldn't be an issue. This is all cosmetic. Although, I would definitely want to buy new rims as those would always bother me. Is this excessive ware for 17k miles? Possibly. But I think we would all be surprised at the condition that many cars are in when they are traded. We rarely get a chance to see them before they are cleaned up. I've seen low mileage cars at dealers before they were cleaned that I wouldn't dare sit in.
The 2 year CPO is huge on a car like this and that is what you are paying for at that price. I would still want to see the previous maintenance records to make sure that it was kept up at least mechanically. (were oil changes done as recommended?)
With todays car market and with a 2 yr CPO, I think the price is about right. Again, as long as you are happy with the condition that the car is in after they finish going through it.

By the way, the marks around the striker for the rear hatch are normal and they all look like that, even new cars.

While the body/wheel/interior damage might be superficial, it is indicative of a car that's been used carelessly, if not hard. I'd walk...

If someone or multiple people took that little care of a car, it probably was thrashed as it was driven as well. I would walk.

all evidence the car was parked outside its entire life. the base calipers fade but for only 17k miles those are very faded which says to me they were taken through some high heat cycles as well. The scratches on the lower bumper will NOT come out with a dealership detail and I can almost guarantee they have no intention on repainting those body panels or they would've done it before listing for sale. Secondarily, all the scratches in the clear coat need a full paint correction to come out and again not something the dealership is likely planning to do nor equipped to handle. Their "detail" usually consists of a wash, clay bar, and wax at best, so I wouldnt hold out immense hope it will transform the car.

With that said, for $54k you are in "S" territory and the Black Edition cars really didn't offer anything special you can't find on another car yet dealerships try to mark them up as if they were some super special model. my opinion keep looking, there are a few for sale on this site in that price range that are far better examples. These cars are fairly reliable so the warranty to me is less important than finding the right car, if you are worried can always purchase a warranty for any car you end up buying.

Good luck, I know the search can be frustrating and the desire to have something now can cloud or make you justify things you know don't feel right. Take emotion out of it and look at it for what it is, an object for which you have a certain standard in mind.

Hard no; that car's been rode hard and put away wet. As others have pointed out, some of those "scratches" are a lot more than scratches (esp. the fascia in the last picture; that looks like it was driven into a concrete wall and run along it for a bit), and the condition indicates a total lack of care on the part of the previous owners. The curb rash on the wheels is unacceptable, and no detail is going to remove that. Plus, the Black Edition really isn't all that special: I looked at one before I bought my S (both 2016s), and the performance difference between the two was night and day. You can probably find an S (maybe with higher mileage) for not much more than what they're asking for this one and you'll have a car that's a lot more fun to drive. And, as others have pointed out, you can get an extended warranty lots of places to replace the CPO.

Pass is best. Don't rush this process or you'll be in a world of regret, ESPECIALLY with that ridiculous FIRM price!

I don't know how you do that much damage in those few miles.

That looks like a rough, rough example.Kinda like how rough BMW lease returns generally are.....owners treat them like appliances and take zero care of them.
