Default The deed is done...to 718 from 981

looks like I'm moving across the street to a new address 718

as many of you know I recently decided to get back into a manual and the 718 won out in the end.

This is not a debate thread as to which one is better, as this whole thing probably never even happens if I got my 981 with a 6MT instead of PDK.

This is all just my personal preference after owning manuals in all my previous sports cars and just simply missing that feeling.

After test driving both a 981 CS and 718 2.5 GTS back to back a couple weeks ago, I personally liked the 718 better...so, the decision was made and after selling my 981 a week ago I hopped on a plane on Thursday to Tucson and drove home in a CPO with only 16,500 on the clock 2018 718 6MT in graphite blue metallic.

Couldn't stop grinning the whole way home...loving it.

plan on lowering and exhaust (Soul or AWE) as soon as possible, then a tune eventually but for now enjoying the heck out of this thing and freaking love the color

Congratulations...I've been following this on the 718 forum as I'm considering a similar move for different reasons. I am interested in hearing the spec of your car and also why you went for a 2.0 after driving a GTS 2.5. My thoughts on a 2.0 would be to add a Softronic tune almost immediately, followed by a Soul downpipe and eventually exhaust - curious about your thoughts.

Thanks!

great questions

Ok so, only reason I test drove the 2.5 GTS as opposed to a base or S, was simply there was no other 6MT's in a 100 mile radius of me at the time and the San Diego dealership had both the 981 CS and a 2.5 GTS so it was a great way to compare back to back....

Price was the biggest reason, the GTS I test drove was almost 30K more than what I ended up getting mine for....at $90K there is just too many other vehicles at that price point to compete with the 2.5 GTS imo...would probably get a gated R8 at that price.

I was pleasantly surprised when I finally drove my base 718 6MT.....it is a quick car and actually just feels quicker than my previous 981 CS.
So after a few weeks of searching I came across a graphite blue 6MT that I just fell in love with after the dealer sent me a quick video walk around....
It was the right color and about $10K less than any of the S ones on the market and zero GBM to choose from. So I called the dealer and made a deal I was very happy with.

Mine is a 2018 GBM 6MT with about $13K in options
(Bose, Premium pkg, LED headlights, 20" Carrera S wheels, 14 way, sports, etc)

I figure for $999 APR tune it could easily be faster than a stock 718 S, so saving $10K and getting the color I wanted with the wheels I wanted was well worth it....for now I'm just gonna enjoy the stock tune until I get used to driving with three pedals again anyway.

I would highly recommend test driving one to see for yourself....I fell in love the 718 and that instant torque as soon as I test drove it, but it may not be for everyone

yes, it doesn't have that growl of a flat six, but imo it is just a better car in just about every other aspect....I like the design, the cabin tech and low end torque.

lmk if you have any other questions...I will have much more feedback in a few weeks

I'm currently trying to sort out which car I will keep between a 987.2 and 981, both with PDK. Kinda would prefer a manual too, but looking forward to trying out the pdk. (neither are on the road yet) I too have been eyeballing 718's of late. Mostly because I find the exterior lines of the 718 to be much nicer than the 981. The nose of the 987.2 is also very good looking, but the 981 is decidedly meh. What has kept me holding back on "shifting" from 981 to the 718 is the engine, of course, but primarily for sound and potential fun of wringing out a base all the time for any torque, and the sensation of having to work for it rather than just have it. But in my daily, an Audi A7 with supercharged V-6, I like having torque at modest revs, and I'm not sure I'd mind that in a 718 either. Just drive it differently I guess with respect to how the engine is used and at what speed. No doubt my neighbors would not mind more torque and less revs!

Glad you are so pleased with your 718 purchase, and now you have me thinking, maybe find one to drive somewhere, and then decide if I should keep one of the cars I have, or flip them both and start 718 shopping. I do miss a manual. Hmmm.

Great car to compliment your Rubicon, both are good colors.

Enjoy and be safe!
