If the component is not a regular scheduled maintenance item such as belts, filters, etc., as listed in the maintenance schedule than the item should be covered under the warranty coverage unless the item in question is specifically excluded as stated in the warranty. The shock may be a normal wear and tear but, just about everything to a degree is wear and tear and that the warranty describes what the normal wear and tear period is. Anything less than the end of warranty period would be considered as abnormal wear thus covered under warranty. If you hit a Pothole, than that is a result of an accident/damage as result of an impact which is not covered under warranty. In other words, the warranty states how long certain components and systems should normally last. If the bumper-to-bumper warranty states a certain period of time and mileage and if the shock is not excluded, they shall cover the replacement. The Dealer does not have discretion in deciding what is excluded unless it is in writing.

Technically, ever item in your car is wear and tear.. but that's companies once again finding ways around paying out.
