Well, my Sports Exhaust was installed in the fall of 2015, so the 718's were still just on paper and not in production. The Kit purchased and installed by Porsche of Asheville. Yet it does open up the possibility of an existing part not used on a 981 that came in the kit and was installed.......?

Yes the entire thing is very odd. We know for a fact that its a 718 speaker attachment without the speaker installed or connected to it because someone posted an image of one completely installed on a 718 in your Planet 9 thread. And as I said over there, how exactly would it work since you dont have 718 coding in your car, but it doesnt matter anyway because they didn't install the speaker part! I would remove it and toss it out since you are in there already. No one with a 981 with PSE has or needs this

Here is the image of a complete install on the 718 for those over here:

That's strange. Do any 981s have a speaker there? I thought some have a sound tube, but not a speaker?

Just to add to the consensus, I have all the PSE retrofit parts on my coffee table and there's nothing that looks like that in there.

Nothing like this on any 981. The GTS models have an additional sound symposer valve in the firewall. This valve opens and lets more mechanical noises from the engine into the cabin, but this is not a speaker and is actual mechanical sounds from the engine bay. You can see the black plug on the OPs original image just to the left of this box they mounted where this would be on any GTS model

Default Found Out What it Is!!

OK Guys and Gals, Not knowing what this part is was driving me crazy, and all the confusion on this Forum & the "Planet 9" forum was making it worse.

Plus, some bad information from my local Porsche Dealer Techs was adding to the issue.

So I disassembled my car to take a closer look at the part and get some part numbers, etc.....

So my 981 Cayman has an option that is not on most Caymans / Boxsters,...... yet is commonly seen in many regards.

The part is an assembly of 2 components:
981.637.333.02 - Antenna Support Bracket
7PP.962.132.A - Keyless Entry Antenna

Yup, my car has Porsche Entry & Drive, and this is the Antenna for the Key Fob!

So nothing to do at all with the Sports Exhaust as txbdan and several others have stated. You were right!

Antenna

Antenna Holder with Antenna inside

Many Many Thanks to all who gave their input to try to solve this mystery and provide an answer to my question on this part. Thank you.

Mystery solved. Though I'm surprised that a factory part is installed like that with duct tape on un-sheilded cables.
Thanks for updating us!

I agree with your statement. It is possible that the original cable was damaged when the retrofit PSE was installed and this was the "Fix" that the Tech utilized.. ??

Yet looking at some of the pictures of other cars, not much shielding was used on this cable bundle.......

I don't think I've ever seen shielded cable in a car... I just traced the main harness through cabin of the car through to the trunk to the DME, etc. No shields.

Looks like that part is used in several locations.

The factory location for keyless Entry & Drive is not where shown in OP's photo. My 2016 Boxster S has keyless Entry & Drive and does not have this part located where the OP photo shows the box.

Another note on PSE "kit" installation, my PSE was installed by a Porsche dealer in December of 2015 using a complete kit from Suncoast Porsche, and that kit did not contain anything that looked like this black box.

Yes, there are multiple receive antennas for the keyless Entry & Drive located around and in the car. Frunk and trunk have one to allow you to wave your hand near the latch area of either to open the lid, if you have the key with you. Doors have similar to allow you to open by handle without pressing key FOB button. One inside is used by the system to tell if the FOB is in the car to allow the engine to start and to prevent locking the FOB in the car accidentally.

Could be you are missing this part? Or the Boxster uses a different location than the Cayman ?

Mine was on the engine firewall, right where this diagram shows the parts should be........

I can't tell from that parts schematic that the parts you circled are installed on the engine firewall. Looks to me to be down lower. But whatever. I can tell you that box is not located on my 981 Boxster where your photo shows it and my car had keyless Entry & Drive installed at the factory.

My 2014CS has the Premium Plus Package option that includes entry and drive. I have the same black box with the same “tape” securing the wire.
