Default When did 981 production stop?

I just bought a '16 BGTS and am thrilled with the car so far. I haven't had a Boxster since my '01 S suffered from sudden deceleration syndrome on the exit of T4 at Laguna Seca about ten years ago. I'm looking at the production date on the car...best I can tell it's Feb 2016 which, I suspect, makes it fairly late in the run. I'm curious if someone knows how to find out when production for 981's stopped and, hence, how close to the end of the run this car is.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Congrats on your new car. A Feb 2016 build is very late in the production run for 981s. I did some digging and I think I have an answer.

With regards to the 981 Boxster models, I took a look at a dozen or so 2016 Boxster GTS cars on sale. Almost all were built in 2015 but I did find one made in March 2016. Small sample but 2016 builds were not common. I also took a look at the 981 Spyder registry and the latest production month shown there is April 2016. So my guess is the production run for 981 Boxster wrapped up sometime around April 2016.

I did the same exercise with the 981 Cayman GTS, looking at a dozen for sale and checking out the GT4 registry. Again a small sample but in this case it was easier to find a 2016 build for Caymans. Many between March and May 2016. The newest one I found was made in August 2016. Looking at the GT4 registry, the majority of the final builds were in August but one VIN slipped to September 2016 . So I'm guessing the 981 Cayman wrapped up in August 2016.

I know from my personal experience that no build allocations were available after mid-November 2015 for 981 cars (non-GT4). Some build allocations for GT4 cars opened back up in December 2015, and I took one. I had already purchased my 981 Boxster S in late November off a showroom floor after finding out zero build allocations were available nationwide. Makes sense that a few were built in early 2016, but very few I'm sure. The lines and supply chain were being converted over to 718 production in early 2016. In other words, the 2016 model year production for 981 cars was effectively cut in half to about a 7 month production run.

Thank you for sharing your research. My 981Cayman S has a production date of July 8, 2016 and arrived in US on August 12, 2016 with 4 miles on the odometer.

Interesting. Was it a car ordered by a dealer or did you special order it?

Anyone know why it was such a short production run when Porsche usually has a very regimented 7 year cycle with 4 years of .1 and 3 years of .2

If you think of the 718/982 as a 981.2, which isn’t far from the truth, then the lifecycle was pretty long. 10 years and counting…

I received my base 981 in mid September 2016, and I ordered it In May 2016. It was on a boat with a lot of GT4s if I recall.

I think it was one of the last boats of 981s to come here. Last or second to last possibly.

My 2016 Cayman GTS was manufactured in Aug 2016 and was the 4th last 981 GTS imported into Canada according to VINAnalytics (you need to register and sign in before you can see this info). My in service date was Oct 2016.
