exactly! the car has 1 month CPO left so they probably wanted to dick me around - i mean i would have gladly payed for the bolts + gasket but not the labor

they even at one point assumed i replaced the the manifold with a performance one, i mean why would i do that and bring it back to them ... and i bought the car through CPO from them ! oh well - they basically lost a customer over a few bucks .. probably gonna write a yelp review now ..

Exhaust manifold itself easier to access than intake manifold, but some of the exhaust manifold bolts can be a royal PITA.

You'll need to get creative with ratchet extensions. Something I've found helpful is a flexible ratchet extension like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Neiko-00239A-Flexible-Extension-Piece/dp/B001223OF8/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1EQHS5NRXXGF7&dchild=1&keywords=flexible+ratchet+extension&qid=1626112810&sprefix=flexible+ratchet%2Caps%2C212&sr=8-5 https://www.amazon.com/Neiko-00239A-Flexible-Extension-Piece/dp/B001223OF8/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1EQHS5NRXXGF7&dchild=1&keywords=flexible+ratchet+extension&qid=1626112810&sprefix=flexible+ratchet%2Caps%2C212&sr=8-5
(note that I'm not endorsing this particular product; showing this as an example). Since the torque is only 20 ft.-lbs., the flexible extensions can be used. However, I wouldn't vouch for the accuracy of the torque using them, but if they're the only way to get to a particular bolt, go with what works.

Fabspeed has a great PDF on how to install their exhaust headers which is very detailed and informative. Link below.

$1300 for a few missing manifold bolts...... wow.

$1300, what do you expect from a company that sometimes charges $500 for an oil change. There really isn't anything different on the Cayman than our Toy Sienna minivan.

Asantha de Silva

Thanks for the post.
You encouraged me.
I did my once a year oil change.
While I was under the car, I check my exhaust bolts.
All were good. Thank goodness.
Definitely a DIY.
Skinny 10 mm socket and long extension was all that was needed.

Appreciate you sharing the PDF, DrBilly.

OP, let us know if you need any other info, happy to connect with you. Might even be able to get you a set of our bolts!!

I could make a nice living replacing 981 exhaust manifold bolts at $600 each. Bloody hell. That's nuts (or bolts?)!

Just another voice here in support of the notion that this is common. I’ve lost many exhaust manifold bolts, and I tighten them every time I change my oil. I have tried Loctite blue, careful torque, even hex head bolts of same thread dimensions. This seems to just be an issue, and I haven’t solved it. Quite irritating, but the worst it gets is a little ticky sound from the driver side, honestly. I suppose I’m also uncomfortable with the idea that I am shedding bolts on the highway! (Or somewhere, I hope not at great speed!)

Odd. I've never had an issue.

I installed FVD headers 2 years ago, and I check the header bolts with a torque wrench every oil change, based on reports that they come loose. They have never loosened once. I really wonder why some have this problem and others don't.

Maybe replacing the bolts with drilled headed bolts with safety wire could be a solution?

I was going to check mine today during my first DIY oil change. Wish someone had told me these were external Torx!! Sheesh - who ever needs a tool like this in the normal car world??

A regular socket will fit that type of bolt the same way you can conversely use a torx bit in an allen head bolt
