I used Vin Analytics quite a bit during my search this year.

I agree, I found VIN analytics indispensable in my recent hunt for a 981 that ended in a purchase.

Fully agreed.
And I made this spreadsheet which helped evaluate values.
Feel free to use...

great sheet @stormrider , tip for excel noobs..
highlight first row (click on "1"), then set filter
"Alt" "D" "F" "F" this toggles filter on or off
"Alt" "D" "F" "S" this keeps filter on, but resets to "show all"
you can then play with the dropdowns in each column to pull info.

Pics, moar pics!

They just salted the roads where I live, so my 981 Boxster S is now in hiding in the garage.

Wow, I never used it like that.
I just was able to track (and keep track) of the cars, how long they lasted on the market, their options(VIN), location, and asking/msrp%.
w/ 10k mi, my 2014 cayman was purchased at 62%

Last spring, when I started that sheet, the first 2 cars, were about 56%.
It was just too early for me to jump on one then, and I thought covid would send people to sell their toys to raise cash... boy was I wrong.

My car is the Navy/Black from Willow Grove towards the bottom.

It is an incredibly useful tool for sure. Porsche has a great search tool for used cars that their dealers are selling.

Now if they would just come up with a consolidated service record. This drives me completely nuts. Every time I take my Toyota in for service and they proudly show me everything that has ever been done on the vehicle I get a pit in my stomach thinking about how P-car dealers can't share that info.

I commented on the Jalopnik article, and will
do so here to give credit, that I used VinAnalytics religiously along with hanging on here for 18 months to learn from all of you before finding my perfect Cayman. So thank you again!

The line of best fit on Stormrider's spreadsheet is y = -140297x + 113065, where X is percent of MSRP and Y is miles. So if you see a car with 20000 miles, it "should" list for 66% of MSRP.

Honestly I think that's coming in the future - go to 17:20 in this Doug Demuro review on the 992 and you'll see that they have a facility for it in PCM:

Obviously, how well this feature works depends on 1) if the owner ALWAYS takes their car to the dealer and 2) if said dealer can be bothered with adding entries. But theoretically you could have a digital record of everything that has been done to the car, right in the infotainment system.

Gotta make sure you at least ask. I traded in my 996 for a 14 981 with 25k km back in Aug and part of the deal (in writing) was an exchange of records for all work completed. Luckily the cayman had been wholly dealer serviced and they were able to print off a complete service history of the car right from day one without any previous owner identifying ID. So, they can do it...but you have to insist...sometimes many times
