That's a 981 generation Boxster (MY 2013-2016). The looks didn't change at all during the 981's production, so it's impossible to tell the exact MY without some more info about the car.
Based on the 19" wheels and the colored front grills (the ones below the daytime running lights), this car looks like a base 981. Base and S 981's were the only trim levels which had 19" wheels as an option, and base cars had the colored front grills as standard.

Sure thing!
Depending on what your wife is looking for in a Boxster, used 981's can be had for a pretty reasonable price - you can get a decent-mileage base or higher-mileage S for ~$35k, give or take a couple grand. 981's are pretty bulletproof reliability wise - the only prominent issues that seem to come up are cosmetic (warped door panels for cars with standard leather).

It is also a post-2014 car, as the 2014 cars had the circular driving lights in the front, not the LED spars like this one has.
You can also tell this is probably a base model because the S/GTS cars came with red calipers by default. Obviously everything can be optioned, but black calipers rarely are.
If you can see the back of the car, a base model also usually only has one tail pipe sticking out.
My guess: 2016 Base Boxster

She was just saying she took the picture in March 2017 and that it looked pretty new back then.
