Default I had one of those fun experiences in the car today

Whelp -- it's Texas, what can I say.

Sitting at a traffic light on a frontage rd of I-20 in the left lane but not left turn. A big diesel Dodge truck pulls up in the right lane with the noisy turbo and fart can exhaust. I can just see his front wheels in my right window. There is an on-ramp about 1/8 mile down the frontage angling left, and it's coming up on 5PM. He give the throttle a few blips and hops forward a bit trying to power brake it. I just know he wants to pull in front of me and gob me with diesel smoke and noise, and not get in line behind me and 15 other cars.

He jumped the light just ahead of me, and I dropped the clutch on the big four banger.

HOLY-come to Jayzus! bruther!! I had never really pushed this thing down hard from a standing start before. First gear doesn't last long, and by the time I was pulling through the upper part of third, the truck was a dot in the mirror, I was on the freeway, and the speedo was in illegal territory. I had to brake pretty good and shift up carefully.

I'm no great shakes at drag racing but it made that turbo diesel truck look like a trike with a broke wheel. Man, it moved on out quick. The book says 0-60 in 6.1-ish and I've got good tires and a nice clutch. I'm betting I got there just about on book values and it was strong.

As I was having a bit of fun, on my way to the dr office I took a few offramps and slightly over posted speeds to check the cornering.
I. Am. Impressed. Flat and stable with a slight understeer which I could easily control with throttle around 4 grand. What a day. It may not make a good DD, but for blasting around traffic, it's pretty decent.

... and 924/944/968's aren't really known as being all that quick off the line, so good for you.

Nice work! Also, just FYI it doesn't take all that much work (just a plug-in turner will do) to make a dodge diesel run a quarter faster than a 968 (a chipped dodge will do mid 13s while the 968 is rated at 14.2). Frightening huh?

Cornering in the 968 is a true joy, one of the most balanced, easy-to-drive cars I've had the pleasure of tossing around in some bends!

I don't know what this guy had, but it wasn't stock and he had a hard time keeping up. We didn't do a whole 1/4 but the first half it was all Porsche easily.

He needed more chips or something.

haha, nice. He also might not have put his foot down all the way, may have botched shifts if a manual, etc.

Well, he had enough hoof in it to belch some quality black smoke, and make a hell of a lot of noise. I can't believe from what I saw that he was holding back.

I think he may have done the low back pressure muff, and put the big tires and wheels on but didn't do anything to the engine. It was an auto trans, so there was no shifting on his part.

The 968 is not good for the whole 0 to 60 thing. It is great in the corners and roads with shorter lengths. It has amazing balance and pointing ability. I have learned to never try and race anything with my 968. Don't get me wrong here I'm not trying to be negative. It's just that the average car today has a lot more HP than 10-15 years ago. Not to mention the technology advancements. In the end, I love the 968 for its character, it's ability to make you connect with the driving experience.

interesting that the clear winner is another 4 pot. I'd say the 968 doesn't do bad at all.
