Thumbs up Dissection Question (stock muffler)

I found a very old post where someone cut open a 968 muffler, however the post is so old, the picture is no longer available. In order to figure out if the stock muffler is capable of handling more horsepower (by adding larger piping both in and out) I would like to see the inside of one.
Anyone have an old muffler and a desire to share pictures of its guts?
Thanks,

Hey Gene...are you talking about the mid-muffler? I have seen pics of it dissected but never the rear muffler. I removed my mid-muff and put in a straight pipe and I can tell you the stock rear muffler is really loud without it, so it must not have much in the way of baffling in it. Hope this helps.

If you're willing to compromise a bit (i.e. loose a little HP) here's what I did on my Mazda to the factory resonator and muffler. Didn't want a raspy sound like so many of the aftermarket cat backs. And, with supercharging I was going to be putting out right around twice the factory (USA) HP at something over 300. Final system was headers, a 3" cat, a full 3" exhaust, a 3" cherry bomb type glasspack (to replace the resonator), and a 3" pipe into the factory muffler with the factory dual exhaust tips (each about 1 3/4" just out of the muffler but only for about 2" before growing to about a 2 1/4" diameter). So, the only restriction that I left in the system was the outlet of the factory muffler. I'll never knew how much it cost me in terms of HP, but compated to other comparable builts/boost level to mine, it seems fairly inconsequential. Sound was great, not factory for sure, a bit deeper with no buzz, raspiness, etc.

So, to your exact point, I'd change the factory resonator to a straight through glasspack especially if you decide to go with a larger diameter pipe. And I'd weld a larger diameter inlet to the OEM. Keep the OEM outlet if you don't mind a little restriction loss, along with keeping a factory look.

Is there a consensus on the removal of the restrictor plate on the front end of the stock resonator?

my first instinct tells me that it wouldn't be worth the effort.

but i'm really not sure.

at least 5 Rennlisters have copied my exhaust recipe with the SLP Loudmouth Resonator between where the cat and old resonator was located, followed up in the back with a medium to large glasspack.

all loving it.

the latest convert (post #323).
