Default 968 cab third tail light

I have a 95 968 cab. The third tail lite was't working so I tried replacing
bulbs. The electrical innards disintegrated in my hand. Interestingly enough the upper aluminum casting has a GM part number on it. Called GM and they said the P/N I had was an old casting #. Quite obviously the entire light came from GM. Can anyone give me any information on this light? (Available from
PCNA for $425)

these should be plentiful in the used market. post a WTB and you should have a few people step up and offer to sell you one. I have one but its attached to a deck lid that I paid $125 for. If you are interested in an extra deck lid I would let you have it for the same $125.

They are the same part that is used on the Corvette convertible of the same era. Both were finished off as convertibles by ASC.

Some people convert the innards to support LED lighting, I think there have been some threads on this. Try a search.

Any idea which year Corvette? I could never find a picture of a Vette or other GM product where this was used. I've never seen it confirmed. It would be nice trivia to know. Thanks.

Believe the '88 Corvette convertible has the same third brake light. I've seen more than a few 968 owners delete their third brake light because it's ugly and GM-related.

Hmm, I recall getting bulbs for a corvette CHMSL once, or at least looking up the prices at the auto parts store and then getting the bulbs from Home Depot. It's possible it's not off the Convertible and maybe it's from some other variant. This lamp looks similar, and the LED mod looks pretty easy:

I have one lamp out on my black car so I should try a light strip like that.

Cheers,
-Joel.

Dave G, who created the airbox mod, used to offer led conversions-but he stopped selling these several years ago.
