Default Brake piston shims

Are the brake piston shims required? Even if the new pads already have anti rattle backing on the pads. Thanks.

No, mine got so rusty that they started disintegrating, I pulled them all off a year ago. They don't make any difference, most brake pistons just use a circular contact surface anyway.

Any downside from not using them(pad squeal, pad rattle, pulsing).

I can't tell you absolutely for sure that they won't ever squeak any more without the shims than with, but I can tell you that I run Performance Friction 97 pads, which will squeak a little no matter what, and they seem to generate the same noise with and without the shims. No rattle, no pulsing.

I finally installed a set of EBC Yellow Stuff pads( promotional freebee) and am really impressed as compared to the Porterfield R4S. Definately an improvement in stopping power. They do have the anti rattle backing already on them so I'll probably remove the existing rattle discs. Thanks again for the response.
