Do I want to turn my 968 into a racecar?
I currently race a 325is w/M3 motor in NASA's GTS2 class. However, I'm ready for a change and was thinking about converting my '94 968 into a GTS2 racer... The 968 has about 147K on it with the head basically rebuilt about 20-25K ago and some trans work done as well... I'd run it at about 200 rwhp, so it would be slightly restricted and at about 2900 lbs. Any thoughts on reliability at that HP and weight? Fun factor seems obvious... What about what's needed... such as rod bearings/new clutch pack/suspension upgrades, etc...
or talk me out of it!!!
Thanks for your thoughts!

sad. to even think you'd consider doing this to your gorgeous, Polar Silver car. take the other Krause.... he started with a DE car and set it up for full racing. if you have to do this, please get a 944, as the 968 tubs/cars are just too special.
btw, Van had passed like, $60 k in his 944 T pca racer before he totaled it a couple of weeks ago. but not incredibly too horrible.... all he really needs to do is get a suitable 944 tub and move everything over. he chose to part the car. having seen all the work he's put into it in person, i think that's a mistake.
talk about a slippery slope. a racing budget can get really out of control fast.

I like building up a car, so not factor... More concerned with reliability and the items mentioned... I built my current racer and am building up a 912 vintage racer..
However, thanks for your response!

Alright.. since you like a project and want to build another car, I say go for it!
Any idea what current rwhp is? Is 2900lb with driver or w/o? I haven't been around the rulebooks lately, but those specs sound somewhat similar to PCA Stock class for the 968.
Certainly suspension is needed.. but again, not sure what the rulebook allows or not. I'd check, for starters, what the 944 supercup (944Turbos) run as an idea. I imagine its massive springs/shocks/helpers.. larger sways, etc.

I agree it would need suspension, although it has m030 sways and and koni SA sports... My feeling is that running at slightly under stock hp by limiting the revs slightly could mean a long lasting motor....
Thanks again for comments!

If you want to go racing why not start with something like this (for sale on Pelican $5,600.00) an improve on it instead of hacking your 968.

Seems an odd choice, to turn an unusual, pristine, beautiful car like that into a race car.
It's got a lot going for it, certainly, but there must be a more beat-up 968 to start with, or maybe an S2?
The 968 engine certainly is bulletproof. The limiter is past peak horsepower, so if you wanted to lower it to limit horsepower for regulations, you'd have to set it very low and eliminate a large section of your powerband. I think either extra weight (maybe strip it down and then ballast it up to weight) or, again, an S2 might be the answer here.

yes.......
Yes you do want to do it. You will love the modification journey. You will love the end result....and for my 5 cents worth the car is there for you, its not a collectible (doop lots of flames coming my way), and its not worth much, so hey just get into it!!
Re mods....there are a lot of voices as to what to fit, so thats likely another project.
I focussed totally on suspension, brakes, diff, handling etc and have a pretty quick car and see no reason you wont find the same outcome. eg:....I am always getting asked how much boost my car runs, and it is none! It just flies on the tack as is... have fun.....

glad to see more people having a very clear understanding that our entry-level P-cars are really not collectables and it's doubtful they ever will be. nowhere even close. be that as it may. Polar Silver on black is so pristine, i'd simply kill to have that instead of white.
i haven't alluded to my desire of having a Polar Silver or Ice Green 968, and having that color a while before getting the Monterrey Blue pearl Lambo color down on the car.
great post Pops......
and absolutely true. at 145,000 i still can't get my car in the mood to burn off some oil.

It is your car and you have to be happy with your decision, but 968gene and I keep something of a watch on this and it's really sad to see that almost every week we can find another coupe that's been totaled, being parted / sold as salvage, or converted to dedicated track use. Polar Silver isn't uber rare, but it is one of the more rare of the standard colors. Mine was the only Polar Silver coupe at Parade this year.
Yep, they make neat race cars, but it's always sad to learn that another that will never cruise the streets. We only had 2234 (coupes) in North America to begin with. After almost 20 years are even 1/2 still on the streets?
With some looking one could likely find a car with some cosmetic needs and a trashed interior to start the track project with. I would love a 968 track car also, but I personally couldn't start the project with a decent driver.
Just my thoughts. My best wishes regardless of your decision. Keep us posted.
