Pinion bearing whine: remind me??
I'm getting a whine from the back of my car and am really hoping it's not the pinion bearing, which was replaced for that by some shop in AZ 5 or so years ago.
Can someone concisely post the definitive test?
Many thanks.

Remove the rear carpet and decelerate in-gear from 80 mph - if indeed it's the pinion problem, there will be no doubt as it becomes louder over time.

Definitely that sinking feeling. Hopefully just a wheel bearing.

Thanks. That's the test I recall. Doesn't look good.

Doing that test, if it's bad, will sound like a jet is trying to land on your hatch.

What I have is a whistle: sine-wave like. I'm hoping it's the new Dunlops, which are noisy anyhow. Or maybe a wheel bearing.

That doesn't sound like pinion bearing to me. I've had them go bad on me twice.
