Found it. Classic throttle position sensor failure - got a crack in the carbon block. Put a multimeter on the TPS output wire and SLOWLY turned the throttle from closed to WOT. Output rises smoothly except for one tiny gap (too small to hold it there) between 3.9V and 4.0V, a little below WOT. So the sensor works perfectly over most of the range it normally sees, and when I hold it at WOT it works perfectly, but when I blip it to WOT, the signal cuts off twice in a row and the computer freaks...but the anomaly doesn't last long enough for the OBD1 to record a code and lock the CEL in.
