Damian, what changed with the door panels?
There's nothing bad about buying a '92 except some of the VERY early ones could have S2 connecting rods. Not a big deal with 225 lb-ft of torque but they're not forged.
Also, you won't find a 1992 with m030 sport suspension.
Once you get into a 968 the model year doesn't matter...perhaps different on paper but they're all basically identical and great.

FYI > My '92 has an option 220 and is a Torsen differential, although I'm not sure if it came that way from the factory since I didn't purchase the car new. The car is an option 220 car though.

Wheel styles are exactly the same. 16" wheels are standard. 17" rims are optional. Again... this is according to the Porsche factory work shop manuals.
With the exception of the cars listed below, there were only 2 wheels available. And they are the same year-to-year.
The CS had color matched rims, and the TurboS/RS had different rims.

My 1992 has R134. It would have been converted at some point, which is trivial at best, but there are no indications via required conversion stickers, that this was performed.

The later door panels have different stitching than early ones. This went right along with the change from 944 to 993 type seats.
Exhaust tips are indeed different; early ones have a very nice 'rolled' lip, later ones are straight and sharp.
CS models offered color coded wheels as a no cost OPTION, along with a garish side panel decal that not many took up. You'll see plenty of white and yellow CS's with color coded wheels, but not many in black or red ones.
Early and late cars had Cup 1 16" wheels standard. Early optional 17" wheels are Cup 1's (think 964 Turbo) and later 968 17" optional wheels are Cup 2's (think 993).
