Tiptronic trouble
I'm considering the purchase of an '93 968, which the owner (dealership) says has a problem with the tiptronic switch, so that the car only drives in auto mode.
I don't know much about tiptronic transmissions or the problems they normally can have, but what are the chances the problem is the switch, wiring, etc. - something cheap to fix, as opposed to the car needing expensive tranny work or replacement?
The car is out of state. Thanks.

I don't know the first thing about the Tip. but if it is a simple problem (like with a switch), let them fix it. If they're unwilling to fix it, I'd expect a hell of a price break on the car, since it pretty obviously isn't going to be a simple or cheap fix.
From the tiny bit I know about the Tip, and the much more that I know about Porsche / Bosch switchgear, I'd say that yes, a switch failure is not unlikely, and could cause it not to change mode. What I _suspect_ but don't know is what other, pricer failure modes there are that could cause the same problem.
You might take your question to www.968.net and the discussion boards there; there are some knowledgable people there, and it's an active board, or at least used to be.
Jim, waiting for the snow storm....
