I always change all my belts every 30,000 kms on my cars, good maintainence is the cheapest form of insurance after all.
100,000 km? So I would be very safe to change every 80,000kms?

Don't you think that's a bit of overkill? I just changed the belts on my S2 at about 42,000 miles and they still looked like new. They were just under four years old and had about half a dozen DE events on them. To each his own.

Yeah Tom, it is kind of excessive, but I run my engines with a fair bit more performance than they were supposed to have, and I figure it's better safe than sorry. Also, most vehicles I work on are domestic, and don't have good German belts.
As for the $5-$6K for the turbocharging, thats for the parts, no labour. It could be done for a lot less, but thats for a bulletproof turbo job, no corner cutting.
I think Kokeln is the best value for a turbo job.

Tabor, the cam "chain" and guides if avail should be changed before 100K as there have been a few sprocket failures at 85-90K miles. I would think anything past 75K is getting into the bonus round.
very expensive if they wear out the sprockets. The belt is good for 60K by the Porsche book. It used to be 40 but Porsche bumped it out. Most folks are doing them at 40 anyway. 35 is really cautious. I have not ever heard of a belt going below 35 and that was due to age not miles.

Yeah, but belts are cheap, and new engines aren't. I'd rather feel foolish wasting money on belts every 20k miles, than feel foolish in the middle of a blizzard because my timing belt snapped and my motor is destroyed.
So change the timing chain at 75,000 you say? I plan for the turbo, and it will make around 400-450 hp, this is going to be my street/speed channel challenge car, and I want to be very safe, as it will be raced every couple of weeks.

I agree with CBass. When I owned my 968 I changed the belts not because of milaege but because of age. Mine was not a daily driver so I had 8K when i changed them!!! Like CBass said better safe than sorry. That went with all the mentainance I did to the car regardless of miles. Every year there was fresh oil, fresh fluids all around even if in that year I had put only 1K.. I always follow that with every P-Car I had and I was never let down...
As to the original question, yes the motor is pulling noticably stronger when the variocam kicked in. I loved keeping it on the power band emiting a nice Alfa Romeoish sound.
