968 Transmission Dead or What
I was driving down the Interstate at 65ish and BOOM. My 92' 968 Tiptronic
begins slowing down. The engine is running fine and I can blip the throttle
but the car is still slowing down. The boom sounded like a drive shaft or
U-joint snapping. I pull over and get a tow back to the P-dealer. The
P-dealer jumps in, puts it in gear, gives it a rev, jumps out and says that
I stripped all of my gears out! I serviced the tranny at the correct
intervals and the fluid was fine. There were no previous signs of
malfunction or slippage. This was very sudden and it happened at highway
speed. The P-dealer wants 6000 plus 800 labor for a new tranny. I still
don't think that the transmission is bad. There's no rattling when it's in
gear and you give it gas. It just doesn't move. Can something else be the
problem, like the differential? I told them to pull the tranny a week and a
half ago but they still haven't got to it yet. Is it safe to rebuild one of
these things if it is the tranny that's bad?
All good and bad greatly appreciated,
Aaron

Whoa there! A dealer said that? Sounds like a simple broken CV joint or halfshaft to me.

Yep,
The guy at the service counter told me that his Porsche mechanic knows his stuff and says that the tranny is bad. They never moved the car from where it was dropped off at. Now I'm just waiting for them to pull the tranny and insert their foot in their mouth.
