#1 Is the heater control valve. If your car is a late 944 it is the same line that feeds the heater control valve on your car now. If its a early 944 then the control for the HCV is a metal cable, and you will have to keep the stock setup, but i dont think it will fit behind the motor.
#2 Is where the tank venting valve draws gas vapors out of the charcoal canister. Again depending on the year you may or may not have this on your car already.
#3 Is the feed for the Idle Control Valve and should be connected before the TB but after the MAF
#4 Goes to a vacuum valve that is a part of the 968 tank venting valve. It only gets vacuum when the throttle is open
#5 Feeds the vacuum controls for your Heater/Air Conditioner system
#6 Goes to the Brake Booster

The diagram above isn't for a 968 since they only use one pressure regulator and not a damper.
If you get stuck on the wiring changes, i have put a 968 motor in a early 944 and found it easier to make my own harness rather than switch pins. Good Luck

What does this venting valve connect to? I'm planning on getting my car "BARed" in CA, so I will need to have all the emissions stuff connected and functioning.

It connects to a charcoal canister under the driver's side fender. The purpose of it is to collect gasoline vapors and hold them until they can be used by the motor, usually during cruising.

Does the 944 charcoal canister have a venting valve? If not, will i be able to buy this venting valve for a 968 and connect it to the 944 canister?

It does but the valve is setup differently. The 968 has an electrically controlled valve. You should be able to connect it to the existing line without and problems

Is that valve on the right side the "shut off valve"? (that's what it looks like according to Clarks-garage's vacuum diagram)

What is that valve for? Is the 968 venting valve supposed to replace that shut off valve?

The Valve on the right is the tank venting valve. The line off of the Throttle Body is suppose to go to it. The Line at the top of the Throttle body is ported vacuum which means it only gets vacuum when the throttle is open. The line at the bottom of the manifold goes to the fuel pressure regulator and the HVAC system. The check valve that is between the Heater Control Valve and the Firewall should be on the other line to the firewall, so it holds vacuum in the heater control system when there is low vacuum.

Would faulty vacuum routing cause my 968 motor to idle around 1200 rpm?

More than likely. A can of WD40 is helpful in finding even the tiniest leaks. Spray around each hose connector and around the injectors, where they go into the intake manifold, to find the leak. When the idle jumps up you have found the leak. BTW if you have a vacuum gauge, normal is around 16-18
