Default black cylinder in trunk

anybody knows whats the black cylinder on the right side of the trunk is? its bolted with some black nylon straps.

my car is a cabriolet. thanks.

It is a weight ballast. Some have removed it and a small percentage of those who have done so report the back end getting a little squirrely after removal. I don't believe anyone has found another purpose so if I'm wrong, hopefully someone will correct me via this thread. I don't track my Cabriolet, so I'm not concerned with weight savings...hence mine is still in place and my rear end is just fine....

I believe it is put there to help dampen harmonics in Cabriolets. Something about when the structural parts were removed to make a Cab., it was thought that the weight would dampen any excess vibrations. I have heard of people taking them out with no affect on...well, anything.

Then do 944S2s have the weights as well? I've never heard of weights in an S2 cab but I haven't read many threads about them.

since its also a convertible, i will keep it and i think porsche put it there for a reason and they know what they are doing
