Musty rotten smell in cabin

Musty rotten smell in cabin
I am getting a musty rotten smell in the cabin when first turning on vent fans and then periodically after that.
Specialist recommended taking skuttle panel off and checking for moisture and blocked drain holes.
Removed wipers last night (although not spindles) and pulled skuttle out of way and couldnt see any water (it was only a quick look though). Plenty of leaves in there but no water.
I assume the fan motors and inlet is the big black thing just behind the wipers with the grills on each side. This area looks fairly clean.
Any idea what the smell could be? I dont have AC

You don't have A/C in the sense that it's broken, or that it was removed, or that you have a 968 built without A/C? Is there such a thing?
Anyway, the musty smell is usually caused by mildew somewhere in your ventilation system. There are a few ways to deal with this, but the easiest is to turn on your ventilation system and spray Lysol into the inlet. Leave the fan running until you can't smell the Lysol anymore.

I've had mixed results with Lysol and don't recommend using it. There's several specialty foaming cleaners available that work better and will keep mold/mildew at bay for some time after cleaning.
The last stuff I used in one of my other cars was from http://www.dwd2.com. You install a port under your dash to inject the cleaner. I've been meaning to buy another kit for my 951.

Specialty cleaner let air out. Then keep a open tub of strait charchol in the car when closed.

Hi and thanks for the replies.
Yes my 968 did not have AC fitted. This is quite common in the UK where a) it never gets that hot and b) AC was an expensive option in 1992.
I will seek out an air cleaning product. Where do you spray the product? I assumed the inlet was in the engine bay and not under the dash?!?!?1
Thanks

On most cars, the heater core/air conditioner condenser coil is under the dash. Ours is too, but the easiest way to access it is to remove the fan shroud in the cowl which will let you spray the cleaner on it directly. Most of the cleaners I've used are foaming type cleaners and don't work well if sprayed through the fan. If you can get a nozzle extension tube though one of the slats in the fan and can spray it directly into the plenum, you should be fine.
If you have your car serviced at a garage or dealership, they can probably do the service for you.
