Default Early 968 rods.

Early rods vs late.

Did they change the rods?..... rod girdles?..... or both?

Can you tell about your car's rod components via vin or production dates?

Cheers,
Joel

Rods were changed. IIRR change was done in September 1993. This means around 1/3 or 1/4 of '94 MY engines used 1R rods. Factory document exists which lists engine numbers for first engines which used 2R rods.

It's already been posted by Tom Carson. Easy to find using "the Google."

**************

"This is covered in Technical Bulletins, Book K, (PNA 000 082E)
Jan 1994 - Dec - 1994 page 11.

For the 968, "as of October 1, 1993, engine #42R0958 - #42R50621"

Included are photos of the replacement conrod that is reinforced in the area of the conrod bolt surface...casting #944 103 111 2R (17.0mm thickness) vs. the original (and pathetic) casting #944 103 111 1R (10.0mm thickness).

Of course, they applied the usual weasel words “If during a repair, one or more rod nuts are loosened, all connecting rods should be replaced”…yada, yada.

Model 4 & 8; Group 1; Part Identifier 1340; Number 9401"

10 to 17mm increase is huge percentage wise.

So if and when I add boost (I'm thinking in the 8-12 pounds range) are my MY92 conrods likely to be a failure point?

I would not build a SC or Turbo 3.0 without changing out the rods and pistons. Wossner has a very economical set up, piston / rods for a 3.0 stock block.

My .02 cents!

Yes. They are already problem in stock engine.

Are the pistons a likely failure point as well, or would you just change them to lower the compression?

so am i reading correctly from post # 5 that changing rod bearings on engines running the old rods (due to risk of fracturing the second time around on torquing), renders doing that impossible.

to change rod bearings on one of the older engines, the only solution would be running the new rods ?

bummer. glad i'm not running one of those engines. (i think). which brings us to the next question....

No, probably just that a tech cannot disturb the old rods without replacing them but could perhaps change an oil pickup tube or oil pan gasket. Policy I expect. You touch them, you change them.

Does anyone know of any early rods that have failed on a 968? From what I understand is that the 928 used the same rod. I have heard of a few 928's that failed but it does not seem to be real common. Does this sound right or am I completely wrong.
