I think it all comes down to how the car was owned. A good owner than maintained the car will sell a car that's inherently more reliable. But I just looked at a '80 928 5 speed that wasn't worth the $1200 the owner was asking. And it still ran! So they're certainly robust, but just like ANY type of car, you have your good ones and bad ones.

Hey, I drive my 968 to LA all the time.

In fact, one time I jumped in it, drove to the bay area, picked up a NOS motorcycle engine, put it in the passenger footwell, and drove home. All in a 24 hour period.

The only problem I had was forgetting sunscreen and sunburning the hell out of my arm with the top down!

I own both the 968 and the 928 and love them both. My 928 is a really low mile car but it's in the garage pretty often for something or other. Right now it's the AC. The 968 is practically trouble free. I keep the 968 because it looks cool, handles great, and is reliable as any car. I keep the 928 because I love raw torque and working on my own cars. The 928 is not the car for you if you don't do most of your own work. Also, not many mechanics "out there" really know how to work on the 928 but the 968 is so similar to the 944 mechanics are pretty easy to find...if you need one.

Buy a "cheap" car of either and it'll likely end up being more expensive than if you paid quite a bit more and just bought one someone else took really good care of and regularly maintained.

Your 928 might have low miles but the 968 you have is 6 years younger than your 928.

I haven't spent a lot of time driving 928's, but apart from the fact they're both front engined waterpumpers and have 8 in their names they have completely different personalities.

No only 44%-50% of the early S4s have LSD, by early I mean before the introduction of PSD on the 90 onward models.
The LSD was an option, similar to 944s, like the S2.
