Not sure about the connectors, but it is a direct fit.
Wiring is fairly simple to sort out.

Does the CR220 have the narrow viewing angle display like the CDR220? I have a CDR220 that I had installed for a while, but ended up replacing it with a NIB Becker TrafficPro. I wonder if the faceplates can be swapped between the CR220 and CDR220 - I suspect they can.

I'm not sure what wiring harness is in the 968. If it's the same as the 944/951, then you'll need to replace it with a new connector. I bought mine from Becker North America - http://www.beckerautosound.com
I also bought the adapters that allow external amp hookup, aux in and the tool to allow radio removal. They're inexpensive from Becker. If the 968 has the later connectors, it should be plug-n-play.

Does anyone have a picture of the 968 stereo connectors?

The standard faceplate on the 220 will not have an angle that you will be able to read in the position the radio has in the 968 (set for the 986-996 vertical mounting position). You will need a modified faceplate. I believe Becker USA may still swap them for something like $100.

I confirm all above, once in ( with the replacement faceplate ) it's a great radio with AUX ( ipod ) capability, and looks right in the car...

Are you guys sure? He has the CR220, which is the cassette version. The CDR220 has the narrow viewing display. SW Stereo doesn't mention anything about the display on the CR220. Becker Auto Sound's website is terrible, so I can't look it up on their website.

There's a model number 4362 and a 6624 listed, but I have no idea what the differences are between them.

Yes, have a CR220 which can not be read in my 968. Instead of getting the faceplate done, bought the Becker equivalent cheap on ebay. May one day do the faceplate to have the Porsche logo, though.. These are in my opinion great radios, and look "right" in the car
