Default Black goop and brown gunk

I have the valve cover and the intake manifold off. (Long story - head's coming off for a valve job.)

The inside of the manifold is thick with black carbon.

Under the valve cover is dark, dark, brown.

What could be causing such extreme blow-back? One suggestion I've been given is a bad oil separator.

Any other thoughts?

Here's a few pics to prime the pump - what do you think? Thanks so much.

General view - at least my cam gears are in good shape.

Rich ... ahem... patina.

Cams removed.

A peek into the intake side - note how black the ports are.

Ha! Check out the exploded attachment points for the timing gear cover. $650 from porsche!

Oil type? Dino v. synthetic? My 944's looked like that with mainly dino. Here is my 968 with synthetic last month at 60k miles.

Sorry - forgot to mention I've been running Mobil 1 exclusively for years. I had the cam cover off 24 months ago and it was brown, but not that brown. I attributed it to the PO's use of dino oil. But since then it has gotten worse - so something else must be going on.

wi54545 - I am very envious of how clean your cams are!

I've used Seafoam on the Land Rover but never the porsche - What's the consensus here about Seafoam?

My bro loves seafoam but I don't want to use it on my cars yet. I figure if it knocks loose all that junk, where is that junk going to float to before the filter gets it? And that junk isn't really hurting anything while it's stuck there, is it? I don't know, just thinking out loud.
