There, I've said it. It appears that the Pontiac Tempest (3.2L) and the Model A (3.3L) have it beat (as far as cars go)

......largest OUTPUT !!!!
That achievement was surpassed in 2000 by Honda with the S2000 with a bhp of 240 (quite achievement considering this engine was less than 2 L displacement).
You will find numerous examples of 4 cylinder engines with displacements greater than 3.0L
"It's not the size that matters, but how you use it .... POWER and TORQUE that is".

You have to really wind these things up to get them to go, but when they do they sound like an F1.
The 968 3.0L is a much more balance motor.

Bracer, that's an interesting quad exhaust in your avatar.
S2000s are slow, the 240hp number is a gimmick that you usually never utilize or witness unless on a track, and even there they are nothing compared to a 968. I'm a total track newbie and I passed all 13-14 s2ks at the last event. They were all probably newbs too I suppose.
I've never heard of a De Dietrich so I don't think it's a production car.
The cylinders in this car are big. I've never really opened up any other kind of engine, so when my brother took the head off his 2.8L VR6 I thought his little pistons looked "cute"!

What got me going was one of the cars for sale (posted by Damian) stated in the ad that the 968 was the largest 4 cylinder in a production car. I emailed them with the correction and then posted here.
I wouldn't count out the S2000 as a quick car. The 2007 NASA TTB champ was John Slinkard who ran a well-prepped S2000, setting a blistering 1:36.5 on the pro course. In contrast, Jim Child, in his 968, holds the GTS2 track record at at Mid-Ohio with a 1:39.04 (Jim is fast!). Now in all fairness to Jim, Slinkard's s2000 is lighter, by how much I don't know.
Below is a link to a video of a TTA Evo chasing Slinkard in the S2000.

The S2K is a rather fast car. I had the pleasure of being behind one for a number of laps with almost some door to door action at Rockingham. Also had to fend for some dry pavement coming off the banking and going down the straight when he blew the motor WIDE OPEN throwing oil everywhere. High revs can kill I guess- or he missed a shift.... Tough break, see ya...

The Porsche 3.0 I-4 was the largest 4cyl in production... when it was in production. So it was fair to put that in the adverts.
As for the pistons, nowadays the LS7 V8 has a bit more bore at 104.9mm.

My 89 944S2 brochure only says: 'The most powerful normally aspirated production "4" in the world today.'
If it was advertised as having "The largest 4 cylinder in production" I think that would have been fair enough. Not sure if it ever was.

Ever see a S2000 catch fire? Amazing, something blows under the hood and flames go up the windshield and over the roof.

LOL that was kind of random...
I guess the s2ks at the track last time were driven by newbs. All 13-14 of them... Of course it's not a slow car, it's just not the golden nugget that some people think it is. This Slinkard fellow is obviously a stellar driver with a superb setup which often times can lead to victory in any car. I would love to test drive one and/or go for a ride in one though.
