Default CR1 wiring - this can't be right!!!?!?

My left channel has been fading so I took the radio out this evening - What I found surprised me - I assume this is not from the factory can someone confirm?

I exptected a connector not the platic but connectors
The duct tape can't be factory
and this square connector was not connected to anything

Anyone?

There should be round connectors for each speaker (assuming no amp), each having two flat blades opposing one another. IIRC they are all different colors also.

This tangled mess is just hard wired (via the but connectors) into the unit.

What kind of person does something like this?

The head unit is the OEM CR1 - its not like an aftermarket harness didnt fit.

I wonder if the PO had the original unit stolen and the perp cut the wire??

Anyway If I cant get the CR1 channel working I guess I just get an aftermaket unit.

Thanks for your confirmation.

Someone who doesn't want to take the time and $ to order a harness adapter or make one.
Not that uncommon actually.

And if you do replace it and want to keep that 'OEM' look, consider some of the single DIN Becker/Blaupunkt units available (with NAV).

FWIW, I put a single DIN Traffic Pro in my wife's Targa, looks OEM, backlight changes from orange to black with headlights, controls factory/OEM CDChangers, etc.

IMHO, these cars look better with German OEM single DIN headunits than some of the Japanese 'look i've got a Transformer coming out of my dashboard' type....but it's just personal preference.

Limitless choices in this area.

Yup.
You can still find them.
I found mine from a Rennlist member, you can still find them on eBay, Becker USA directly (factory remanufactured units, OK).
It is a nice look, however the NAV CD's are NO longer updated, which some people have an issue with.

I pulled the CR-1 radio/cassette deck that I have installed in my 94 968. It looks like I have the factory harness from what I can see. I am getting ready to install a new stereo once I get the wires resolved. I will more than likely have to cut the speaker wires since several of them have come disconnected from there connector. This should be easier for me since I do not have the amps or extra speakers. I also had several loose wires in the back similar to what you have shown. I assume they are for accessories. I hope these images help.

Shamus, that looks like a standard wiring job most car audio places do, or most owners do to their own cars. It can be a real mess to clean up, but sometimes it's not, and as long as it works it should be fine. I would prefer spades instead of crimps, just so one could disconnect it!

My left channel fades - I was hoping to give it a cleaning and spring it back to life, but no go I think the circuit is overheating. There are 2 new-in-box CR1s on e*bay for $300, but I may hold out for the traffic pro if for a hundred bucks extra I can add nav and aux integration...and since it wont be a factory plug and play for either install ease is not a factor.

Does anyone know if the angle is a problem with the traffic pro and a 968? Also there is a newer Becker Model Indianaplis Pro - but i've not identified a source.

Anyway a few things I learned I will pass on.

The radio / stereo /head unit is removed by simply sliding two metal clips to the center unlock position. there are no key's or tools required.

The CDC1 changer is held in place by four 7mm bolts. two on the side and two on the bottom of the unit. all four of them are extremely hard to see never mind reach. My 7 year old with his tiny hands was very helpful in this regard.

IIRC, the Indianapolis did not have/support US maps....but it's been a while and my memory is a bit 'off' lately.

IIRC2, there were 2 versions of the TP, the difference was the front viewing angle....993/964/968 vs 996/986.
The 'fix' was to simply buy the correct faceplate from Becker.
