Default What happened to 968.net?

Does anyone know the real story behind what happened to 968.net? I've read plenty of speculation but has anyone actually spoken to Ray and asked why the site was abandoned? I enjoyed dropping by every once in a while, even though I haven't had a 968 in 3 years, but now it's just a forum full of spam...

Many have tried to contact Ray but none have been successfull. It' really is sad, that was the first site I found when looking at 968s and it was great. Now its just a play ground for spammers. I hope Ray comes back or lets someone else maintain it.

There's nothing wrong with .net...

If you're looking for cheap Viagra- they've got you covered!

If your mortgage payments are too high- look no further!

Haven't seen Paris Hilton's sex tape yet?- .net is the place to be!

Come to think of it, I'm far too young for Viagra (had a buddy who tried it once, though, and ended up with blurred vision for a week), my mortage has always been outrageously low due to a HUGE down payment, and I already saw Paris' tape... and the second one...

On second thought, maybe it's not quite the "only place you're ever going to find good information to keep your car running" someone once espoused it to be, while ranting at me one fine day.

Oh well.... I'm sure some people still find it useful (come on, be honest, you know who you are!)

Hey there! Good to see that you still lurk around here. With the demise of the .net (and some 968-community in-fighting), much of the content and the old members have migrated to either here or 968forums. Drop by sometimes!

It just hammered by the Spammers...most, if not everyone, have not tried to go back.

Rennlist is really a great secure safe place to hang your hat...There are a few 968 boards, too.

I still drop by and try and point the people who post questions to the two main sources for 968 info that are spam free.

Nice to see you drop by

It seems really sad to me when you create a community and then abandon it without so much as a notice to the users. Does anyone have any idea where Ray went? Is he still alive? I know that the board has to cost money to keep running, so, who is paying the bills to the hosting/board company? I liked the 968.net forum despite all of the bickering. I am also glad that we have so many choices when it comes to other great resources for the 968.

Is .net salvageable or has it been hacked so much that it isn't worth it? Would a new administrator have to manually delete all the posted spam or do you just start blocking new spam and go from there?

I’m just thinking out loud because there is some good information on the site.

I find it very stinky that we never had any spam on 968.net until this Admin Dude (A total scum bag if you ask me) hacked into Rays site made it better for no reason and then changed it Back to the way it was !! I havent seen any body say anything about this. Its really a shame that a few rotten apple's with a master plan ruined it for all of everyone. Yes Ray abandoned it but it wasnt him that destroyed it, I would still love to know who the admin dude was as I beleive that this would shed some light alot of what has happend in the 968 community, There's something stinky about the whole deal !!

You can still access some of the information in there via Google, by searching for something like:

"site:65.61.16.109 Quad Throttle"

I doubt it had anything to do with the mystery admin did. As a person who administers forums, I can tell you it is very hard to keep spam out of a forum that has a open registration system like this one. Even with a fully patched system (which this one was years behind) spam gets thru. It use to be that you could stop the spam bots easily, but they have gotten so sophisticated now that it's almost impossible. And then there is the live human spammers, there are actually people in some foreign countries that scour the web for forums and manually create accounts and start spamming just to get there crap out there and links to there site in order to improve there search engine rankings.

So ultimately the death of 968.net is because there was nobody administering the forum. Any forum on the internet requires a daily watch for any spam that is getting in. Ray probably should have handed the site over to somebody to administer it when he lost interest or switched vehicles, whichever one it was. But I guess he had his reasons for not doing so.

We just need to move on and hang around in the 968Forums.com or Rennlist. We can make these two better sources of info. 968Forums is already a great place for 968 help with all its DIY and technical articles. Both of these two forums are closed registration systems as some have noticed, once you sign up you have to wait for the admin to approve your registration in order to weed out the spam, so they will be around for a long time..

Josh,
Thanks for explaining that, Makes sense i guess, what gets me is that before the admin dude started playing in there we had NO SPAM and ray was gone for a long time before that, as i just posted on 968.net what was the problem to begin with before the admin stepped in, Yes it wasnt as advanced as the others but it still worked and there was no spam. I for one was happy to see the change's made to forum but that's was when I thought it was Ray making the changes, your right though its time to move on ! For me personally I just get a foul taste in my mouth every time I visit 968forums.com, it's a little too "flashy" for me. I know that may sound bad, but hey, now that I'm 100% American (well I'm running two passports anyway) I can say that, right !! Freedom of Speach and all.

Did I hear the bell ring? Are we really going to do this again? I had the feeling that everyone came to a sort of unspoken agreement that kiddy-time was over?
