DIY Cam Timing
Attached are fotos of a setup for timing cams on the 928 (sorry..but the 968 engine is similar) and I just got through ordering the following items to do this from Harbor Freight. Also, the fotos are not mine but a 928 colleague. I'm using them to craft my own setup.
Dial indicator #33675-OVGA $13.99
Multi Position Magnetic Base with Fine Adjustment # 5645-OVGA $17.99
Shipping $7.99
Total $39.97
Now I need to make a base like in the fotos to anchor the setup. Magnetic doesn't work on aluminum blocks! Have any of you done anything something similar to time your engine? It requires advancing/retarding the cam gear. Instructions should be in the WSM.
ALSO, I have what's known as the PorKen 32V'r Cam Timing Tool that I've used when replacing the cam gear to make sure I don't lose timing. Works great on the 928 and one can retain the stock timing...or play around with retarding/advancing timing for best low end grunt or top end peformance. However, it presupposes that one starts with a good timing. Simple to use tool. I love it.
The question that's still out there is whether or not it will work in a similar manner on the 968/944? I'll check the next time I retension my Tbelt. The link to Ken's site explains the tool. Take a look at http://www.liftbars.com/ and tell me what you think? If it would work on the 968, I'm sure you'd like the tool. I'm just ordering the Harbor Freight stuff because I'm way **** on all my cars.
