thanks for all the info, guys, and the various opinions. thanks for the pictures Raj. I thought the compression numbers were pretty good, and I'll try to borrow a leakdown tester. losing very little coolant. anyone like to walk me through a leakdown test ? thanks, Donn C.

epilogue - my mechanic did a coolant pressure cap test and said there was comprehensive head gasket failure. he pulled the head and it needed milling, but was otherwise ok, and the belts look ok, so I'm just in for the head gasket and the milling... I fit a little better in the seat with the thinner wallet, anyway... thanks, Donn C.
