Is the 968 REALLY better than a good 944S2?

So flash, sounds like the diff upgrade is worth it? I am gald to hear that if so. I can not imagine what the difference feels like but can not wait to find out. Wanna describe an example of the difference you feel in a torque sensing as opposed to open or clutch LS?

it has an audi stamp on the casing though, which often makes it confusing

i believe it does use the G50 diff though

But I don't think he mentioned who built it.
Just as an aside, pollivie made an interesting comment in a different thread back in 2004. I'm quoting him as follows:
"The internals of the transmission on the 968 are Audi O1E which was the 6 speed version of the O16. The O16 was used in Audi front wheel drive 4000's and 5000's imported into the US. The O1E was used in front wheel drive V8 powered cars overseas and was only sold in the US in the 968.
You may wonder how I know all this? Well as my signiture says I am building a GT40 replica and the O16-5N is the transmission that I am using. The problem with this box is that the ratios for the most part are short for a V8. First is useless and 5th give around a 3500, 4000 RPM at 75 MPH so you end up using the box as a 4 speed and just live with the high RPM cruise.
The O1E is the perfect bolt in reasonable cost solution to this problem except, as the transmission is configured in the 968 it has no bell housing to fit directly to an engine. In addition the box never having been imported here in any other car is only available in europe and by the time you find one and import it the cost ends up around 5 to 6K. At that price you might as well go with the Porsche G50/50 except it requires chassie modifications on some frames to fit.
Just as a final note on manufacture is comeing out with a 3.11 ring and pinion which will solve the problem and others ahve fit the ring and pinion from the 951."

this could be semantics too - after all how many parts on this car are made by porsche? we still call them porsche parts though
i haven't done a part by part comparison to see who did what, and only have the books to go by, but they all seem to say it was a collaboration
a case of chicken and egg?
love to see the GT40 - that's one of my favorite cars of all time

And as another aside... Porsche is now using Aisin's 6-speed manual transaxle in the 997. Dunno if they also use it in the 987.

"I think if you compare a good S2 to a good 968 it'll come down to price and styling. You'll get more hp and tq, 6 speed gearbox, much better styling (imho), much better lighting (way better night driving), similar handling, identical load and passenger ability. You can occasionally find a nice minty S2, but most have been around long enough to have had a few cheap owners-who skimp on maintenance. It's getting that way with 968's, but there are more that are kept up. Also, the S2's do have more of an Audi connection, the 968's were the first 4 cyl waterpumpers built by Porsche at Stuttgart. Way more exclusive is the 968, with 12,000 or so built compared to six figures of the 944 variants. You'll never have someone mistake an S2 for a new car, but 968 owners get a lot of 'is this a new Porsche model?' Driving value for the dollar the comparison at times can be identical. " -----

Funny thing though... 968 values continue to slide (the bazillion cheap Boxsters ain't helping) while 944S2 values are fairly steady. I paid $8500 for one in 2000 and sold it for $8000 3.5 years later. Today that same car in the same condition would be worth about $8k.
