Pinion bearing failure?
I've read a lot of threads but nowhere have I found the answer to this question. Does the whine stop, get quieter, or get louder when the en't driven the clutch is engagaed? I haven't driven it for 2 or 3 weeks and decided to take it to work this am. Whining noise appears around 3k RPM. It seemed worse on the way home. The car has 81k and never a peep until today.

Depends on the speed you are driving. When going slow it is barely noticeable, as you go faster it gets louder.
Once you go above 60mph it quiets down again. At least that's how it is on my wife's 94'.
