Question Reading CEL fault codes without pulling dash?

For some reason my Check Engine dash light does not work, making it impossible for me to read the fault codes. Rather than remove the dash to replace bulbs, in the short term, couldn't I just identify the right wire from the DME controller and tap into it with a light or volt meter and read the pulsed code? What amperage are the dash lights?

Thanks.

It's a good thing I didn't pull the dash to replace the CEL lights since it was a dead DME causing me problems. The CEL light only works if the DME is getting power and functioning while most the other dash lights will work even if the DME is not getting power. No one responded to my question so I assumed that the answer is elusive. Perhaps this will help the next person who might have that question.
