I drove about 25 miles in short trips today. The starter performed extremely well on each of the eight starts. The engine feels smoother (balance belt retension) and stronger when cold (fuel check valve).

I found a few pictures and the 944 / 951 / 924 starter appears to have a much shorter shaft and bendix.
You should be able to do something similar with it.
I wonder if 968 Tips have the same starter as a 944? I assume the long shaft and bendix are to compensate for the thick dmf.

I saw a thread started by Bruce Ward and had a bit of deja vu. I doubt those pictures are around anywhere.
On a side note, last time my starter acted up I said F it and just bought a rebuilt one from Sunset. Under $100 with core charge. I think I still have my original starter, all gummed up, somewhere around here.

Thanks anyway, odb812, I managed it on all on my own. I did use a small amount of bearing grease on splines and gears.
I would like to add the DIY, as well, with my solution for reassembly of the ring and collar. Once I slid the ring into place and did the best I could to reduce it's diameter with a pair of pliers, it was still difficult to make the collar fit back over it. I wrestled with it a good while.
Ultimately, I put got the ring and collar close together, with a 13mm wrench behind the collar and a 12mm wrench in front of the ring, then squeezed the two wrenches together with a pair of channel-lock pliers. Voila! Snapped right into place.
The starter is much, much smoother than before, and not disengaging.
