Default Belt Cover / Enclosure Gap

I can't say for sure how long this gap has been here, but it doesn't seem familiar. Assuming it's has not been there as a result of a poor repair that I have just missed over and over, any idea what would cause this? I did try just squeezing it back together and it is snug in the position it is in, not loose. Have you seen this before and especially in a case where it is trying to tell me I have a failure of some kind?

Assuming that no one has had it off and reassembled it incorrectly, those upper covers are magnesium from the factory and are horrible. They split and they warp. I have replaced most of mine with the all-aluminum versions. I purchased the high dollar ones from Porsche for my nice street cars and the generically produced billet ones for my track car.

The only problem with the generic billet version is that it does not have the slot with which to check camshaft timing. It uses the hole on top which has a press-in round plug. This doesn't make checking the cam timing impossible, only more difficult. I have a red paint mark on top of the appropriate tooth of the camshaft gear so to make it easier.

I know, some of you are thinking "How often do you need to check camshaft timing??" You don't, but for me checking both camshaft timing and balance shaft timing is part of my post-run inspection after every track event.

Y'know I've wondered why in the world would the OEM part be something as relatively exotic as magnesium? Really necessary?

No one seems to have issues with magnesium wheels. Also interesting is how aluminum was fine for everything else on the engine, but not these covers...

There's another version of the cover, but I can't work out who actually manufactures them as the descriptions are the same:
  1. https://rennbay.com/Hardware/Cam-Gea...944S2-968.html ← These guys seem to be the manufacturer
  2. https://944online.com/camshaft-gear-...44s-944s2-968/
  3. https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/RB1049.htm
This one also lacks the timing alignment window. Seems a shame to drill a hole in the front cover before installation, but I suppose that would be one solution.

Yeah it is a shame the maker didn't just make it with the window to begin with.
